I wonder why mp3's are illegal when downloaded.
In fact, the person who offers illegal mp3s to download breaks the law, the person that downloads them doesn't do.
Cause the person downloading mp3s could not decide, whether the mp3 is illegal or not. So if you download an mp3 you don't break copyright, the person that offers the dl does that.
Of course the music industry says, that the person that's dling an illegal mp3 also performs an illegal action. But thats not true.

With software, that's another thing. There you break copyright if you don't have an original CD.

What ya think?

Hehe, I read and signed this thing months ago. Haven't heard anything about it since. A few years ago I wouldn't even imagine something like this being signed into law but now..... It just reinforces the fact that our government has grown to an unacceptable size. If these companies can't find a way to protect their product, they should consider a new medium or figure out an incentive to persuade people to purchase. Now that anyone can get the technology equal to or better than the suppliers, these companies go running to the government to drop their giant thumb. I'd like to see some G-man come to my house and try opening my PC. hehe, poor #######.

If it comes to pass can someone tell me, how expensive would it be to ship components to B.C. from the U.K.? (I if this happens i won't be trusting anything in Canadian Stores, they'll all have the American stuff if the U.S. government does do this horrible thing)

Silly, paranoid people. I'm not going to bother pointing out the fact that Canadian computers will not have American "policeware" in it.

What is it? Is it software? A chip they put in your DVD player? Oh, please... am I the only one who knows how to defeat copy protection here?

Just a side note to Kazaa users: Have you ever heard of Brilliant Digital?

IMO its another RIP bill (UK thing, go read up on it), really opposed at the time but turned out to be nothing serious in the end.

Kinda like Napster closing

Still i'm glad my government isn't ruled by a blatant Socialist Demi-god bent on total power. Democracy my arse, the American government is hopelessly left wing.

No offence to any patriotic peeps here!

It strikes me as funny that through all the "political" posts that occur on these forums, there seems to be a difference in how U.S. citizens view their internal politics and how the rest of the world develops their opinions of U.S. policies. Interesting. Maybe further discussions will help clear this up.

Jobabob is probably right. It's unlikely that something like this would pass but the fact that they would even suggest it proves that our elected officials should get a serious smack on the back of the head. Protect the borders(Life), build some roads (Liberty) and get the heck out of our way (Pursuit of happiness). That's their job. Instead they want to micro-manage every single aspect of our lives. Ever heard of "job security"?

ACK! Way too many consonants. Don't misunderstand, imo they're welcome to prosecute anyone attempting to sell copyrighted material. That line of work is just weak - attempting to make profit with no other effort than sticking a disc in a drive. Get a rope I say. But I don't want the government or anyone else restricting what I have on my home PC. That does bring up our current problem of personal privacy and the ability to search for terrorist activity. It's a tough one. Of course this bill doesn't address that but it is in the same ballpark. We'll see what they come up with.

The US of A is not left-winged, at least not in a European scale. Not even close.

"my uncle knows a person who besides hsi job burns cd's for a living and has just had a child all i have to say is democratacy? ya right"

Are you saying making money without creating real value is democracy? You're post is leaving me confused.

Not like Stalin. At least, not yet.

I could write a long diatribe about the current state of U.S. politics, but instead I'll just try to explain (in my own words) what Jobabob means. Our government has grown exponentially in size ever since The New Deal after the Great Depression. The programs that came out of that time have continued to grow and their growth has eased the increase in other government programs since. One thing is true about a government program - once it is in place, it does not go away. These programs require individuals and money. The larger the government gets, the more power it gains. As we all know, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

IMHO, the ideas that surround the Socialist and Communist political parties have good intentions. Unfortunately, the failure of the human condition dictates that these parties will eventually implode. Don't get me wrong, this is true of most or all other political parties but those of "left" leaning or Liberal ideals which place so much power in the hands of so few, tend to prove my theory best.
But what about the U.S. "Democracy" or "Republic" system? The core philosophy behind "The Great Experiment" (as it's been called) would remove that increase in power from the few. This leads us back to the last 100 years. Citizens of the U.S. have allowed their government to grow without fear of reprise.

ugh. I wasn't going to say so much . I hope that didn't confuse you more.

OK, now we're mixing at least three different discussions, but what the hell.

First, I think we've got some misunderstandings about words like 'liberal', 'left winged', and 'conservative'.
It's plain to see that every country has its own definition of right and left, USA left generally equalling European middle - right. I know that there are exceptions, Italia, for example, but let's keep in mind that labels like 'liberal' are bad - the German Liberals, for example, are currently in the press because of antisemitic statements which I would never agree to, although many American liberal ideals appeal to me.

Second, for the statements about power in one hand being a sure way into corruption - I couldn't agree more with Spooge here, but I'm sorry to say that the American conservatives (namely those in the White House) are doing just that - think about this new secret service Bush wants to create.

Another example: The international court that's supposed to be created by the UNO. This being one of the pet projects of the international lefts (whoever they may be), is both defended and attacked with the argument of too much power being concentrated in an uncontrolled institution:

Conservatives argue that this court is in no way controlled by the people, while it can theoretically decide over the fate of everyone (including the President).

'My' people argue that it is indeed controlled - the judges aren't getting in there because they show up one morning, after all, and that we've got right now a institution that decides about the fate of people who can't control it - the USA.

Saying that one side of the political landscape tries to put as much power as possible in a single hand is like saying that one side of the political landscape tries to introduce despotism - both don't want to.

It is, however, true that some poltical actions may lead into such things, what is mostly not intended by anyone, and should therefore be avoided. The question is which actions those are.
