Music?!

Hey guys, Im new to the community, so this is prob a big newb question... but, are there already plans for music for this mod. Cause thats one thing every other mod is missing! I didn't want to see this one go the same way, only because this looks like the most badass mod around and a little creepy music or some crazy fast beats would add so much to the environment, or feel of the game, which I believe is a main thrust in the mapping department. But, I also ask because I happen to be a musician, and am attending one of the best music schools in the world, so I have the skills and resources to work on some music for the mod. What do you guys say?? Trane

I'm talking about original music the game developers could copyright and ship with the mod. Not just any music, though a built in mp3 player would be the best bet for playing the music. But, if they like the music im hoping that it can be used more deeply within the mod. It would be much more interesting if the mapper could activate certain music at certain points. Such as when the clutch point is reached the badass heavy drums start playin, or something similair. Trane

There will be music in NS, and mappers can use mp3s in their maps. You'd have to talk to Flayra to get specifics about the music though. I'm not sure what the status on that is.

*edit* Let me clarify about the mp3s. NS has an entity that allows mappers to play mp3s in their maps, but generally, they are not for playing music, unless it's a radio/tv/etc. in the map. I'm sure this isn't a hard and fast, iron clad rule, but the in-map mp3s are meant for longer and/or better sounding atmospheric sound effects. I think the music will be more incidental to events during play (correct me if I'm wrong Flayra).

I think Flayra said that the music is going to be orchestral (instead of techno or rock or whatever you might want), and I think that he also mentioned that Jeremy Soule, a very nice digital (though it sounds very real, and very good) orchrestral composer, was interested in NS. I don't know the current situation, however.

But yeah, mappers are welcome to put in MP3's in the maps, thanks to a very nice new trigger for playing mp3 files!

So, no need to worry about NS not having music :-D Although, I don't remember HL solo having much music... but then, I never played with the CD in. Maybe I'll play through sometime soon, with the CD in. There was that one time with the space-launch where some cool techno beats started up and scared the willies outta me!

Nothing like killing aliens listening to the Matrix soundtrack. Or Song2 from blur. Over and Over and Over.

    WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO

This actually strikes me as a very good point. If any of you read my suggestion in the Suggestions forum, then you would have found that I find sound very important in a game. Sit down and play Resident Evil, or Silent Hill, or any other games that are supposed to scare you, and you'll often times find that sounds and music play a big part in making you #### yourself.

And no, Half-Life didn't have much music in it at all. All I can remember is when something REALLY ####### weird or freaky is about to happen. You'd hear an eerie and very short little musical thing that lasts all of 20 seconds.

I hope music is used in such ways in NS. It would be awesome!

i already had an idea about a system that identifys three or four status of players...: in rest, in battle, after battle, advancing/scouting (near hive/infestation area). There then should be clips of music made, all clips about 20/30 seconds long. Then, every 20/30 seconds the program checks the status from the player and play a clip in the according status. These clips should match (like a dominocube: the end is matching with the beginning of another one, and the beginning of the first one is matching with the end of the other one), for example making them all start/end with the same few sounds.
There should be a lot of clips, and the computer random pics a new 'battle' clip when battle starts.., and when battle is over (after 20 secs or so), the 'after battle' clip would start...

this idea is hard to do, and would need a TEAM of music artists AND coders, but it would be another unique feature in the list of Natural-Selection...

anywayz, I hope the soundtrack will be Homeworld like. This soundtrack is the best one I ever heard from a game/movie.

I agree the soundtrack should be orchestral, no techno it doesn't fit in with the NS-theme. Ns aims for dramatic interaction with players and you can't have techno in that, never wondered when there's a tence scene in a movie ,they never play techno? Well dunno 'bout the music, didn't even knwo there was going to be music in NS, i though the atmosphere was going to depend on the ambience mapper put in their maps, like the groaning of metal, dripping of water, etc. Hey that reminds me it should be cool if you could here the player breath. Immagine standing in a dark room and the only thing you can hear is some water dripping and your heavy breathing, sounds sweet doesn't it?

I wasn't suggesting at all that I dictate the music be techno or anything, only that I could write and record music. The music would be whatever is needed. If it is orchestral music there are over 3 orchestras and concert bands at my Univ. and Im sure I could find a group willing to record. Anyways, all im saying is whatever would fit the theme Id be perfectly willing to do. Trane

I would just want to stress the idea with the breathing that would bring in lots of atmosphere, you could make it so the sound would only play if you stand still and after you have moved a certain distance, otherwise people will be breathing heavy when they just spawn, and if you hear it all the time it'll just get on your nerves. Maybe i should start a new topic, but it's such a trivial thing, just tell me what you think guys!
    Picture it again:

A dark room, you're all alone, distant sounds of combat, the hissing of steam that comes out a broken pipe, the dripping of water you searching the cieling trying to penetrate the darkness in search for a threat, while you stand there heavily breathing *hhhhhhhhh* (something like that ).

And Trane, don't forget that you can talk to the mappers you find in the NS forums directly. I'll wager that some of them would be thrilled to get some original music for their maps. Show 'em what you've got and post us a few samples at your website.
