Doom 3 On X-box

Taken from over at gamespy.

I'll state this now: I'm worried. After watching Blizzard throw away legions of fans to blatently cash in on the console market my fears are that Microsoft is going to dig their talons into Doom 3 as well. Rumours already abound of Quake 4 being X-Box exclusive, at least when it comes out.

Just judging by the most recent tests of the Doom 3 engine, mentioned in another post here, it would seem clear that X-Boxes would be a little hard pressed by Doom 3. That means more waiting time, as the developers will have to dumb down the graphics etc so the consolers don't feel left out. Great, more waiting.

I don't hate the X-Box or any other console. I just get very worried that the PC is going to be forgotten in the midst of the great console explosion of recent years. More and more companies seem to be focusing on consoles, negecting the PC market. I don't know if this is happening everywhere, but every time I go to the local game stores in Brisbane, Australia, the PC section is smaller every time. Fewer new releases, old popular titles, but overwhelmed by the sheer plethora of console games.

We PC users are still a huge market. NS and other online games only go to prove this. I only hope that the developers of Doom 3 and other such titles don't leave their fans of old behind.

It began when consoles started having multiplayer capabilites, and now with games like everquest, the sims, and other massively multiplayer titles, the future for PC gaming looks grim.

It doesn't help matters that compaines like EA pump out games at the speed of an assembly line with no attention to detail and make fixes for the game if it sells, forget about it if it doesn't, 1942 anyone?

Companies will always go where they can make a quicker buck with less effort and as long as there are people to buy it there's nothing we can do.

You gotta remember. When they use the term 'exclusive' they mean exclusive to that CONSOLE, it's still coming out for PC, just not the other gaming consoles ;o

Oh I know it would come out on PC, I just hate seeing development slowed for the PC version (Halo anyone?), or companies just plain deciding the PC market isn't worth the effort

Consoles always go through surges, but I happen to agree with you. PC gamers have been taking it the cahones ever since the great Halo fiasco. Not to mention all the other PC games that magically ended up on consoles first. (Ports make me sick) Hitman2 suffered quite a bit because of the console draging it down, but you gotta see it from the capitalistic point of view, consoles are cheap compared to PCs.. man my Vedio card alone cost more than an x-box with controller and game (asus geforce 4 ti4200 $300 cash when it came out) and no matter what console games will all sell for $54.00 (usd after tax) thats very attractive to companies that rely on initial sales to float them. Bottom line is more people have access to consoles than PCs and the marketing departments at these developers know that. Like HL2 for instance is guranteed to come out for all the consoles.

    Infinitum: Halo was "Xbox exclusive"
Let me tell you, it's been kinda fun playing Halo all these years now for the PC, too [/sarcasm]

As for these "OMG CONSOLE WARS OMG OMG!" posts, it's not as bad as you think.

Most devs have multiple teams, working on multiple projects. PC games can always be revamped, redone, then sold. But if you're making a game for a console you're working on a DEADLINE. Most consoles don't live longer than 4 years! The plethora of console gaming info we've been getting is merely a passing fad, don't worry. EA already has its foot in the door of console games bigtime and will ruin it in no time <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> (I'm being sarcastic again, sorry)

Usually games are ported to other consoles just because the developers realize they can make extra money. "Hey. We can make more money if we sell our souls...Ooo ! Ooo ! Money !"

I'm pretty cynical of game companies when they say its going to be exclusive game that's been taken from the PC.

At the end of the day, they will have fans of the game no matter what console it is released on, and the money is certainly in console development at the moment. A good game should shine no matter what it is played on. If you truly are that worried about commercialism in games, and games swapping to consoles, stop buying the big titles, and trust the smaller companies, those that still remain true to your media. If you are not too busy drooling over PR campaigns...

I think you guys should stop worrying. The market is evolving, and the consoles cannot adapt as well as the PC. How many Halo mods are there? What about Splinter Cell extra levels for XBox? Unreal Championship? What? NO MODS AT ALL?

Why didn't Half-Life revolutionize console gaming like it did PC gaming? No mod community. Nothing. No patches. No developer interaction. Let the consolers be happy with their flashy, all to often brainless games (although there are a few diamonds in the rough). I demand more from my games lately - I want moddability, I want customization, I want some OPTIONS, dang it. I can't get that from consoles, and that's why I don't own a single one.

Bah! Humbug! Forget about consoles. Natural selection (pun intended) will weed them out soon enough, if they choose not to adapt. If they decide to go with the flow, well... they're just computers then anyway.

Don't forget that it's the amount of games sold, not the price they are sold at, that makes the console market attractive. Console games aren't priced higher just because the publishers are evil and greedy, but because of the atrocious licence fees requested by the company that makes the consoles, and the SDKs aren't free either. This is probably the most bizarre fact of the console market: You have to pay for the right to make games.

I reckon that all us PC Gamers with "average"
system specs will be pleased to be able to pick up
the much awaiting Doom III for our X-Box.
Some of us just can't afford £300+ for the shiny
new PC parts so £40 on an X-Box version sounds decent.
