Except, you really shouldn't defend bases with 1 marine and some mines. That's for, say, a res tower, or a junction that needs to be held. The point of mines is, for 8 res, you can set up a choke point where there was none before, and get aliens to run at your relatively straight. That's a huge advantage for low cost. However, like I said, critical areas where you expect massive incursions (or just can't afford to lose) are worth the cost of turrets.
turrets are easily killed and so are the mines(so is marine but he doesn't cost res ...hehe)... anyway.. don't trust neither of them.. use them yes.. trust them no chance.. they suck.. lots of res for not a lot of def.. use the marines.. give them gurad orders.! don't let them just ramboing around.. hold them with a IRon fist...

If I have two hives then I place maby 4-5 turets in each one and then lock it down with minespam. After that it becomes prettymuch immpenitrable. If I only have one hive and they have two I just stick with the fourish turrets and dont worry about holding the location, just taking another one.
turrets are nice for defense, some turrets, one rine with a shottie, YES a SHOTTIE, the fu***** piece of s*** noone ever considered. The good ol turrets deliver a steady stream of bullets while the rine can if the sulk tries to bite nail him at once or if its circling the Tf or one of the turrets same procedure. So one Tf 4 turrets and a rine with shotgun behind a corner saves a base a long time + he can shoot, even when he is reloding!

personally, i love droppin TFs as comm. either to lockdown hives or to keep aliens out of certain portions of the map. for example on ns_eclipse, if say the main hive is Eclipse, then i'll take the res at Station Alpha and SouthLoop, first. drop turrets and then go lockdown Maintenance. i usually go for lvl1 weapons upg and motion tracking, then lvl2 and lvl3 weapons upg, b4 anything else. once res starts coming in, i'll drop another TF at Horseshoe/T-junction to defend the res and that side of Maintenance. so now we have like more than half the res on the map and alien paths have become very restricted. once the weapons upg are done, i start upgrading armor and armory. next hive on the list is obviously CompCore. if necessary, i'll upgrade the TF at SouthLoop b4 we take CompCore. and except for Horseshoe/T-junction every TF location has a PG. once we have two hives i start dropping the JP/HA/Welder/HMG/GL packages and have them walk/fly into Eclipse. sometimes (depending on how the marines do inside the hive) i might have a couple of guys cap Triad's res, and put up a TF and PG.

You take a noob Marine who got his legs biten off by skulks, place him on a table with tree legs, give him an lmg and get him a brain implant which makes him think skulks only die with headshots. Then you give him 200 ammo and say to him: There are 100 skulks on their way to you. If you wanna survive, you have to aim carefully. 1 shot 1 dead, ok? Now, as you can see, the poor fella will try to aim, and will try to preserve his ammo (short controlled bursts, remember?). THATS what a turret is. well.... in HK servers, turrets are simply a tool to hold'em off for a while...... and buy time to lockdown hives/research those so called "turret sea" or "turret farms" are just for fun but it's true that without a marksman or someone with welders guarding the TF u'll see it end up in junkyard very soon.....
