and watch it 300 times in 2 days like I did

And listen to the music during the credits too

Then go buy the soundtrack. Very good music.

Then tell all your friends.

    300 times Zarcon? wow. I thought it was a good movie ... but not ... a masterpiece. <!--emo&???--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'><!--endemo-->

IMO Private Ryan is still the best 'war movie' (of the later 90's, 2000)

I'm sorry, I didn't find it to be an amazingly good movie. Watching americans butcher somalians doesn't thrill me.
  • TzarconTzarcon Join Date: 2002-02-28 Member: 259Members
americans butchering somalians? I think not. First, that really never happened, and there was way more to it than the gunfights.

Saving Private Ryan is still amazingly good

I went and bought this the other day and watched it. Pretty good flick but nothing to write home about. SPR is still the best war movie, and probably always will be.

Windtalkers aint got nothing on either of these movies though. <!--emo&:asrifle:--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/asrifle.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':asrifle:'><!--endemo-->

I watched BHD in the theaters, and really i hate the movie. This is just a movie that has no storyline, and is just made for the shooting and killing. All american soldiers look the same so you don't know who is who, so the story (which is really bad) gets badder explained.
I didn't watch a movie; i watched two hours of people shooting at people.

You make it sound like we went in there with the intent to kill, when infact it was merly to capture someone. <span style='color:black'>The military pwns all</span>

There was way more to it than the gunfights. The movie does not feature this. You claim it never happened, the movie features it still. I found it to be an immense bore. I'm not american though, and I suspect I would enjoy it more if I were.

I will give it a try, but if it's made like i.e. Full Metal Jacket.... I won't like it.

Well, maybe it was because I had read the story before I'd seen the movie, but I thought Blackhawk Down was an good movie.

Yes, perhaps the overall story is a little hard to find amid all the gunfights. I do not agree that the movie had no purpose. I think most Americans need to see BHD if for no other reason than to understand the kind of situation we put American soldiers when they are used as the world's police force.

On a more basic level, the movie featured excellent cinematography, ambience, and writing. Yeah, the writing! From conversations about scrabble games and superstitions to more comic relief with the art of coffee making and being too close to a firing M249 (and subsequent deaf soldier scenes.) I felt they did manage to create a plot and character deapth without getting chatty or contrived.

If your thing isn't current events, or you just don't like war movies, then, yeah, maybe you'll not like this one much. I will say there is a lot to learn out of this movie, and even more from the story itself.

Take it easy son. So he didn't enjoy the movie...let him dislike it. Something like this shouldn't make you want to start bashing things.

I rarely take issue with socio-political opinions, as it just isn't that important to me, but I do find it curious that so many non-Americans stereotype us Americans in such odd ways.  Not all of us are uber-guns&glory, hooray for us, borderline fanatical flag-wavers.  No, Blackhawk Down didn't appeal any more to me because I'm an American citizen, nor did Saving Private Ryan.  At the risk of offending some of my aquaintences in this community who are more patriotic (especially those in past or present military service), I was in fact a little irritated by the opening and closing of Saving Private Ryan on shots of our country's flag.  I thought it was completely inappropriate, given that it was not about America.  Our country was involved, yes, but the same beach event (and other land/air battles) were being fought by other countries, none of which made any less of a sacrifice or a contribution.  As a side note, I thought the whole start and end frame story was incredibly contrived, and was only included to make the audience feel 'safe' about Tom Hanks's character, since the first time the movie is seen, the transitional cut obviously leads the audience to believe that he is the old man at the gravesite.  Hard as it may be to believe, there are those of us Americans who are perfectly able to see stories about conflict as simply human events, independant of nationality.  To me, Blackhawk Down was not so much of a "watch the Americans go in and kick Somali ###", it was a story (yes, based on fact) of a half-baked plan gone horribly awry, and the subsequent struggle of a handful of men to stay alive in the midst of thousands of really lethally angry people in totally unfamiliar surroundings.
I sometimes just tire of hearing how all of us Americans all think the same way.  I don't presume the same about someone else who is from Germany, or Finland, or Poland, or England, or Egypt, or anywhere else in the world.  Why would others presume this about me?
