just make a 1 unit think brush entity (func_wall or func_illusionary) with the rendermode set to additive right on top of the light you are working with. Texture it with the light overlay texture for that light. (looks the same but all the parts that arent supposed to be fullbright are black.) Make sure the name of your overlay texture is in your lights.rad, and you're done.

okay but which texture is supposed to be the one that is not in the lights rad file? the one texture thats fixed to the cieling or the overlay thats addictive, and what should the addictive be? 255 or will it still off light at 0?
need more details
but thanks so far

Oh my god... this drawing is just beatiful! Light overlays are so easy - I would not have spent hours drawing a picture that even Picasso can't compete with. Anyone who knows what the lights.rad is for can figure it out on his/her own, I thought. If you don't want a texture to be full bright don't put it in. It is that simple, really!
Sorry, I feel a bit like flaming someone today.

Here's a good lighting overlay tutorial. It was originally written posted by Plaguebearer on the old boards, but was lost in the forum switch. Fortunately, someone decided to repost it. If you want you can ignore the stuff about light_spots if you already know how to use them effectively.
