Internet Rely Chat. Just a program to chat with, chatroom wise. There are alot of "clients" out there that you can actually use to connect to a server to use, but mIRC is somewhat the "best". Most HL shiz is on the "gamesnet" servers, so after you download and stuff, look for a dropdown list of servers and choose either gamesnet's ones. Then in like, the status window, which is in the "work" area, just type things like
/join #channel
With "channel" of course being the name of the channel.
But if you decide to use mIRC beware of people telling you to enter stuff into the chatbox that has $decode in it... Bad things will happen if you do that.
So many wasted lives because of that <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

You'll find the majority of European clans and services using Quakenet.
When you get into mIRC, you'll spend ages writing scripts for it, then oneday you'll get into a flamewar with a hacker who will bust your puter, and you'll cry for all your lost scripts!!

Gamesnet is what most people that play hl are in because of CAL.
