Strange Fps Problem...

Spec:
Athlon XP 2000+
256Mb P333 RAM
GeForce 4 MX 440 64Mb
Win2k Pro
Running in Open GL at 1024 x 768
V-Sync On

Problem:
During the game my FPS is set at 85 (refresh rate of monitor) and runs fine smooth with no drop at all. However, when I look at something like a Phase gate it drops to 42.5 (Exactly half the fps) and stays there untill it leaves the screen.
It's not just my gfx card not being upto the job because even with 8 Pgs or a battle raging behind it it stays at 42.5 and is fine at 85 no matter what happens otherwise. However as soon as the pg leaves the screen it goes back up to 85. So is there some kind of console command about the particles that causes this to happen and does it happen to anyone else?

When your FPS drops below a value that can't sync properly with 85Hz, the computer will limit your FPS to 1/2 the refresh rate in order to stay in sync (it will simply display the same image for 2 refreshes instead of 1). At least that seems to be the way it works from other people's experience

I would try running with Vsync OFF and see what the FPS actually drops down to while looking at the phase gates. As long as your monitor refresh rate is relatively close to the max FPS, you should get a good picture with minimal tearing.

You should check out Roob's Vsync/fps Guide
