Oklahoma City got hit by one today.
Well for those who don't know, today Oklahoma City (where I live) and some surrounding cities got hit by a tornado in the late afternoon around 5:30pm CST. We even made the front page of Cnn.com and MSNBC.com heh.

I'm safe and my family is fine and everything, the tornado skipped us completely. But it was really really close to us, though not as close as it was on May 3, 1999. Some of the same people who lost their houses back then lost their houses again today. :/

Stupid weather...

that's terrible news...i hope those people who lost their homes have insurance. i mean, i'm sure you have to if you live in an area that gets frequent visits by tornados like that. and who has had first hand experiences with it before.
if i lost my house wisard of oz style i'd be devestated...all my things gone and God only knows where they landed.
we get earthquakes out here in cali, but it's been so long. i don't think no one really gives it a second though...we're so over due for a gigantic quake soon, it's just been so long since we've had 7.0 or higher.

i'm glad nothing happened to you though. you wouldn't be here now would ya?

My condolences to the victims of the tornados. I've always wondered what makes people rebuild in areas of the U.S. where tornados hit every year. I'm lucky enough to have never witnessed one myself, but the movie is enough to keep me from moving to those areas any time soon. It may have snowed here (calgary) today, but I think I can handle a little lingering winter.

A few years back, my house got hit by a very strong, focussed wind (the weather guys wouldn't say it was a tornado :/). Fortunately, it only took the roof of the house but it leveled my dad's woodshop in the backyard. Pictures never do justice to the kind of damage these storms create. We spent weeks raking the insulation and various other debris from the yard. But, we got lucky - the house still stands today.

One picture I took shows a 3ft wall stud from the woodshop lodged straight into the back of the house. It's a scary feeling to know that the power of nature can completely overwelm you without reason or warning.

I can only suggest that anyone who has the means, think about making a quick donation to the Red Cross. Right now there are alot of people trying to figure out where they're going to sleep tonight.

    Holy S...!

Im very sorry for your loss. There's no such thing as tornados in Finland, so I'm considering myself lucky.

Belive it or not we are strating to get tornadoes in the UK. We have a had a few teeny ones on the main land that dont do any damage but we have been getting some quite fierce offshore ones. It's quite worrying. I wanted to ask about insurance for high risk tornado areas. Will the insurance companies insure people in these areas for tornado damage??

We got hit by 4 of them 7 years ago to the day yesterday (May 8th). Creepiest thing ever - The sirens went off about 8, 8:30 PM... and then died. No fade-off as per the usual or anything, they just stopped. The first place hit was the civil defense system. Residential area just west of town got smashed. Another hopped around my neighborhood... leveled a department store a few blocks from here, leaving the grocery store next to it unscathed... jumped right over us, touched down just to the north of us a few blocks. Neighbors looked up through their window wells and saw it go over them. All in all relatively minor... few injuries if any, only fatality came when a woman was hit by a car the next night - there was still no power and the driver didn't see her crossing the street where there normally would have been a streetlight illuminating the area.
