Map Idea

CommanderCommander Join Date: 2003-05-05 Member: 16087Members

Can't map...but heres an idea!
How about ns_starcraft! And instead of the current textures signifying a hive nearby with a model or texture of the creep the zergs were on when they had buildings in starcraft. I dunno if this a good idea but here it is! Please tell me if you wanna make the map.

I'm not a fan of Starcraft and I think this would be too much work and too difficult

Somebody ought to make a Starcraft mod, now THAT would be awesome!

All right, so what if it would be aliens versus human again? As for copyright... Heh, somebody would have to get them, without luck probably...

I think you could put in a 3d model of the creep as a prefab or something. The only downside is that it couldn't recede like in starcraft. I am sure if somebody tried to make it they could ask a modeller in the modelling forums to model it. I could skin it and make the textures if need be.

edit the defence chamber or something to have a 'creep' as it's base that extends outwards

I mean actually on the map if someone makes it.

If the creep would be a model, believe me, that would suck big time. First, there are "clip nodes" around models, which aren't really accurate (will change in 1.1, but still wouldn't really be correct)... And models aren't really made for walking on in Half-Life...

So that would turn out weird or choppy and would probably degreade the playability of the game...

Oh ok well damn. But what about a box, you can walk on a box and there is no choppiness and that is a model.

Yeah, if it's properly done. But with creep, you would either have to have a small model of it (that would look ugly, as the model would be seen again and again), or a big one (that would bring high polys and "clipping")...

So either way, creep would be cool, especially if it would really be living, but would be somewhat hard to make (although it's a really simple design)...

How about like 5 small models of the creep and put them in different parts?
• RPG_JssmfulhudRPG_Jssmfulhud Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4006Members
Yes, that could work, but imagine a level full of models? Sure they would be low-poly, but all the entities slow down a server...

Well if someone loves me they will do it anyway. Please?

Maps actually take quite alot of time to make, and I don't really think someone is willing to spend such a long time on someone elses idea, you best chance is to make the map yourself, and just make the creep with textures.
• CommanderCommander Join Date: 2003-05-05 Member: 16087Members
Well I wish some on will make it though. I tried mapping and I am horrible so I surrender and humbly ask if someon will make it.

I will gladly make it if someone makes a Starcraft mod. And i don't mean Starcraft skins in NS!

Wouldn't it be possible to put the models under a brush that is invisible to the players? It would kind of kill the effect in that people would be "floating" above the models, but I suppose it would be better than having the problems with clipping.

That said, i've just started doing this, and even though I know next to nothing, I know that making a map like that takes more work than I could imagine.
• RPG_JssmfulhudRPG_Jssmfulhud Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4006Members
Yes it would be possible, but we were talking about creep growth too. So, the creep would grow and the invisible clip should "advance" or "retreat" too, which wouldn't really be possible with the current mapping power (would be, but very primitive and complicated)...

As for mapping, yeah, it takes a good bit of your life to make something look decent...

I don't care about the creep expanding. I just care about the map.
• RPG_JssmfulhudRPG_Jssmfulhud Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4006Members
Well, wouldn't it be creep if it weren't expanding, right?
• CommanderCommander Join Date: 2003-05-05 Member: 16087Members
Well considering the limitations in Half-Life the extending and un extending of the creep dont really matter consider its not possible without making a new mod, and I know I wouldn't want to program a StarCraft mod then in 5 months reprogram and make a brand new mod for Half-Life 2. So basically until September 30 there will be no StarCraft mod if I ever feel like making a StarCraft mod. And I won't make it by myself I will have a team.

Blizzard doesn't like people doing starcraft mods in half-life, even though you get no money for it, so it's more like free advertising, but they still will shut you down if you attempt to make one.

Nope, if you get the right message, the right respect and all, you might have luck winning their confidence of your good-doing...

If you are lucky enough to receive a reply, that is...

How about a game called Star Monsters which is actually StarCraft a StarCraft mod and has all the creatures renamed to wierd things then have a third party release a renamer so that it looks like its not your fault?
• RPG_JssmfulhudRPG_Jssmfulhud Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4006Members
You can do that... And whats more, you would have to change ALL the creatures in game also...

The creatures, the story, the sounds, the names, the "world", everything is owned by Blizzard...
• CommanderCommander Join Date: 2003-05-05 Member: 16087Members
Is there anyway I could get permission?
• RPG_JssmfulhudRPG_Jssmfulhud Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4006Members
Yeah, as did i with X-Com: Apocalypse...

Just find the Blizzard CEO and ask him politely... Aynway, you won't really get to the CEO in the first run, so you will have to do some research and sweat a bit... Good luck!
