The Animatrix is a series of 9 short films which tell at short story set within the wolrd of the Matrix. Some of the worlds best anime, cg and cartoon directors and groups have come together to produce this rather unique adaptation of the world the Matrix inhabits. The Wachowski Brothers wrote the script for quite a few of the films, and thus keeping the world of the Matrix very solid and without any noticeable flaws.
The reviews will come in the order they are shown in the film. Onwards!
Producors: Larry and Andy Wachowski
Music Composition: Don Davis
The Final Flight of the Osiris
Director: Andy Jones
Writer(s): Larry and Andy Wachoski
Songs: Juno Reactor - Congo Fury
Additional Notes
Choreopgrapher: Seng Jeorng Au
What can one say about this film... It really gets into the action from the get go. We are introduced to Thadeus (Voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson) and Jue (Pronounced Jue-A, voiced by Pamela Adlon) in the middle of a training session within a dojo very similar to the one Neo and Morpheus fought in. However this fight comes with a little twist. It's a swordfight wear both fighters are blindfolded, if this was set in any other universe other than the Matrix one could easily scoff at the notion. However the scene however is executed marvellously by Choreographer Seng Jeorng Au wherein our two protagonists slowly declothe each other piece by piece utilising a Japanese Katana and a Chinese Longsword (Wielded in a convincing Wushu fashion by Jue), it does get rather tittilating nearing the end of the fight with Congo Fury paying close attention to the on screen action with quick cuts of both of them in nothing but their underwear. They both lean in for a kiss due to the heat of the moment, which is cut short by an incoming alert. Sentinels.
The name plate of the Osiris comes into view and we're back in the cruel hard reality that the denizens of zion experience every day. The Captain, Thadeus, is alerted to the scanner which has picked up sentinels near the ship. This probably wouldn't be a problem any other day of the week, except today instead of 10 squidies we got around 100,000 directly above their ship. A partol of squidies quickly jars the crew from disbelief into action as the Osiris powers up and tries for an escape through uncharted tunnels. The rest of the crew enter their prospective gun turrets and try to fend off their approaching foe. One or two go down, but the others are still there edging every closer.
Well apparently the pilot is in the middle of making a few bad life decisions and we end up on the surface looking onward at the machines which they had picked up on before. Upon closer inspection several tunneling machines are can be seen drilling into the ground, and guess which last city of man is located 4km directly beneath them? Yoooooooooou guessed it, Zion.
Out of the seething mass of machines rises a mountain of sentinels all bent upon the destruction of the Osiris and it's human occupancy. A decision is quickly made, a message needs to be sent to Zion alerting them of the impending threat. Thus Jue elects herself to start broadcasting and deliver the message. As she is being plugged into the chair Jue grasps Thadeus's hand and goes in for the kiss they were about to have earlier, they each give their final goodbyes as they know they are both about to die and away she goes. Bursting out of a nearby high-rise building Jue proceeds to her way to a mailbox, however first we need to get onto the ground. How may you ask? Why by jumping through the middle of a some power lines! I don't know it was about the only time within the film that felt slightly cheesy and out of place. Sue we get to see some cool moves, but surely she could have gone another way.... oh well, more eye candy I suppose. Things aren't going quite so pretty for the occupants of the Osiris though as the sentinels have caught up, swarmed all over the ship and are now proceeding to take the crew out one by one. They quickly overpower the ship and it is ripped in two (How the ship can still retain power and broadcast into the Matrix after crashing into the ground)
Now in a desperate race against time Jue sights the mailbox, runs up, hastily moves a little old granny out of the way and drops what appears to be 2 cassette tapes in the mail. A quick exchange with the old lady, which I personally felt was just slightly too cliché, and she's on her mobile trying to reach Thadeus. Too bad he can't come to the phone right at the moment as he is fighting off the squidies that have made it within the Osiris with a lightning gun style weapon seen in the Matrix (Which also makes an appearance in the Second Renaissance in a more underdevelped form) "Thadeus" she utters, seconds later she is on the floor dead. A very Shakespearian ending to the film wherein everyone dies and we really aren't given any sense of well being.
As the name suggests, we have just watch The Final Flight of the Osiris produced by Square USA. The same team who worked upon Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within were called back to produce Final Flight as yet another CG movie. They truly are the masters of their craft. Even though I can watch this film and KNOW it's not real, there are times when for a half a second I am watching and forget this fact and I am watching 2 real life actors fighting it out. Thus Square USA have succeeded. They have produced a film with such graphical intricacy that I tell my brain it is not real. A truly outstanding effort.
The Final Flight of the Osiris is easily my favourite film of the 9. Though there are a few indescrepancies that I felt didn't really lend to the overall feel of the story, it is not as if it was a heavy handed approach. Written by the Wachoski Brothers, Final Flight is setup as a prequel to Matrix Reloaded which will, probably, be shown at the beginning of Reloaded so the audience understands what is happening. If not we will more than likely be told "The Osiris has been destroyed, in their final message they tell us the machine's are drilling" Easily the most integral film in the series.
I thoroughly enjoyed this and I believe you shall too. Hell, a few re-watchings are needed to truly appreciate this film. Long live the Wachoski Brothers!
