<div class="IPBDescription">They annoy me!</div> I'm not going to start a huge rant about DNF but why do they have to be such a-holes about it? And quite frankly I'm sick of the whole DNF idea. I was a huge fan of duke 3d when it came out and was really excited about DNF but I am now to be quite honest bored of waiting. They should have done what Valve did and kept their mouths shut untill the closing stages of it's development. I don't care if it comes out tommorrow I probably will be the last person in the shop buying it.

Roll on HL-2 and DOOM 3!!

Oooh, harsh. Seriously, once you become an entire game company and can create and publish your own games from nothing and set a timeline months in advance on when you're gonna be done and stick to it, then you can complain. Until then, they're doing their best to make the greatest game they can, and if YOU want to do all the work neccessary to get it done by tommorrow, then by all means, go ahead. But they need to take their time, and do it right, so other people don't whine about how buggy it is when it comes out, because people like you forced them to bring it into the market half cooked.

    Whew. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

You completely missed my point! Why do they have such a wierd attitude was my point. It's putting me off from taking an intrest in it. And giving so many relese dates and pulling them was just stupid. They knew how much work they had to do so why lie to everyone and giving out false release dates? I wasnt giving the critisism about their **** developing ability so mayby you could actually read my post before replying in the future.

I personally don't understand why Duke Nukem Forever has taken so long, and why they continue to work on it when it has been such a long time. Eventually one has to realize that a game engine that is years old needs to be put to rest, rather than be continually publicized.

Delays are to be expected when working on such a massive project as this. However, there is obviously a big red line between the "<i>expected delays</i>" and "<i>OMGWTH, I could code this myself in BINARY in this amount of time!!!onetwofive</i>", and 3dR has already crossed the line, phased back to the other side, crossed it again, drew a new line, and crossed that.

Blizzard, for example, is famous for its delays. Fortunately, they rarely push a release date past 6 months or so. People don't seem to mind waiting because they know the extra 6 months of balancing and tweaking make it worth every minute of the wait.

I haven't been following the DNF thing (absolutely no interest), but how many months has it been pushed back? I'm guessing you'll need all your fingers and toes (plus the fingers and toes of a few neighbors) in order to tabulate it. Worse yet, does anyone even truly believe the wait will be worth it? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

Heaven forbid that they, you know, might be updating the graphics? Remember all the complaints about how TF2 graphics were going to suck **** because no one could comprehend the idea that there were no screenshots of the current version on the new engine? If/when you do see something new, don't expect it to look anything like it did before.

Now I'll be surprised if I'm the only one who has noticed this:

Duke Nukem Forever = DNF = Did Not Finish

coincidence? I'll let you decide that for yourself

Kung Fu, I understand that! It just seems that they took a bit longer. Max Payne took 3 years, but really was only brought to light in the near end of its design period. Sure, there were screenshots at the very beginning. But after that, it was hush hush.

I think the main problem is that we feel somewhat cheated. I do, at least. I would rather have a company never release any information about a game until it's ready (Half Life 2) or keep an update on everything that's happening, including new screenshots. I don't like it when a company makes a big deal about a game that won't be out for another 3 years, building a website filled with screenshots of the game, and then dropping any news information until its release. What's the point?

I've never followed DNF, but there's a certain quote I'd like to bring up.

Brook's law: "Adding staff to a late software project only makes it later"

Perhaps they haven't figured this out?

I am sure that something has gone terribly wrong at 3D Realms. Betcha its all kinds of politics and publisher shenanigans or something like a really awful atmosphere and people pulled from the project. Surely their team isn't so incompetent they couldn't fabricate DNF by now. They ran into something. We can only guess what.

Dont assume DNF has been on a steady development path and is just taking ages. When DNF first made a serious appearance years ago, it was accompanied by teaser shots and quite alot of information about the game. The announcement was quite similar to the recent HL2 announcement, although i don't think they had it in a playable form.

At the time, they had it running on the Unreal (1) engine. You can probably imagine, it isnt running on that any more. The unexpected delays started when they decided the Unreal engine was too dated for their projected release, and decided not to use it. This will have been somewhere around Q3 era, and of course, no one wants to release a first person shooter using the previous generations technology.

What exactly happened after they decided to drop the Unreal engine i'm not sure, certainly alot of code and work on DNF will have been scrapped when that decision was made. It is quite possible that work on the game went into hibernation during a period where they were unsure what engine they wanted to use. After that, they may have considered, or even worked on DNF for other engines. The last rumour i heard suggested they had decided to make their own engine, and run DNF off that. Creating an engine is alot of work.

Now of course, you have Doom3 and HL2 on the horizon. We can safely assume that these will be released before DNF. If DNF is not up to their standard graphically you can probably guess what will happen to it - They either go back to the drawing board and find/create a new engine, or they scrap the project. It may have been scrapped already for all we know.

3D Realms wont release anything unless they can get out of the cycle of finding/creating an engine - working on the content for the game - and then taking so long on content that their engine becomes too dated.

Oh, and EA / EA Sports is the manifestation of everything that is wrong with todays gaming industry.
