Which one, and why?
NS has many many hiverooms. Damn those pesky Kharaa. The big question is, which one is your favourite? Which one do you always make a beeline for, trying to nab for the squidgy cause? There are two categories, gameplay and looks.

My favourite gameplay hive (The hive which is the most fun to assault/defend):

This would have to be Satellite Communications in ns_tanith. The winding corridoors allow a frantic yet effective defence against assaulting marines. The perch up top is a great place to hide, evolve, or just chill out. The secret weldable passage into the hive area adds that extra tactical slant for the marines.

My favourite visuals hive (The hive which looks the nicest):

Generator Hive on ns_caged. I dont know exactly, but theres so much detail, the infestation isn't too heavy, but not too light either, and the pipes and subtle lighting make this a beauty.

Gameplay: This ones a toughie but I would have to say Viaducts on ns_nothing because there are soo many different ways to attack that hive and defend.

Looks: This one is by far Comp. Core on ns_Eclipse. It just looks like any alien infestation whereever you look.

(assuming I'm not allowed to pick any of the hives from ns_hydrosity)

    Gameplay
Generator Hive on ns_caged. There are just so many hiding places.

    Visuals
The Ventilation hive on ns_hera. The first time I looked up and saw that masive fan I was blown away (no pun intended)

    Gameplay:

Ns_caged, and Ventilation System: This hive actually requires a lot of teamwork to take down, one reason for it is that it is quite easy to defend from jetpacks, especially when you have web. But the other reason is that marines need to either weld it open or run far and wide to get in. Also it is not too easy to siege, because it there is the vent leading to one siege spot, and you can go around back to the other. So basically this hive makes the odds even for the alien team especially in clan matches.

Visual: This one was hard because all the maps and hives are so great looking, but I would probably also say that Ventilation 3-C on ns_hera is one of the nicest.

Gameplay: ns_Hera's Ventillation hive, especialy now that it cant be shot from teh double seige ^_^.

I think I agree with khaim here. Refinery is damned cool looking, but can be a **** to defend verus jp whoring marines.

Ventilation hive on hera has been the scene of some of the most glorious and exciting battles I have ever played, several times. Marines milling in at the bottom, or from up the vents. The mazey nature of the nearby pipes makes it a rough job to lay siege to the hive uncontested.

I am also in agreement with you fellows. Bast is such a beautiful map. Ventilations looks great as well as being a cool gameplay hive. I just -love- that big fan.

    Any hive on caged

I like ventilation because it's easy to defend, I like sewers because... I just like sewers (and it's easy to defend). And I like generator because... I just like generator.

    I DON'T like:

    refinery (no cover)
great viaduct (no cover, red room)
satcom (no cover, too close to the marines for my liking).

Of course, these preferences are heavily influenced by the fact that I almost always play as Kharaa

Looks: This one's a tie between Feedwater and Computer Core, Feedwater hive is infested to the core, probably the most infested hive out there, the marines can barely build in there. That, and the nasty sewage water, the butterflys (or something) fluttering around, etc. etc. Comp Core is awesome, the blue lighting, the infestedness, it just looks cool.

Gameplay: Computer Core. You can seige it, you can assualt it, you can jetpack it, and you can hide in it. Maintenece is also really cool, with the lights and the grate floors, and the giant pipes. Good for jetpacking, or assaulting.

Refinary is one of my visually favorite hives (ns_bast)

Tactical hive would have to be feedwater (ns_bast) 4 res nodes relatively close to each other and the hive is not really jetpacker friendly, even though the long hall way that leads into feed is very siege friendly.

At the moment, I'd say Data Core in ns_hera. Besides the processing issue/bug, it's a pretty easy hive to defend with since the vent has a downward slot and marines MUST enter it to attack the hive and it's entrances are limited and pretty easily defendable.

And Fam, Sat comm is probably the WORST hive for aliens you terran lover you! Besides the 3 attack points and the weldable secret shortcut it's also got the gayest vent in the world allowing marines to blow the living heck out of the hive while sitting in the vent safe from even fade acid. All that open space is easy for jetpackers to fly around in and impossible to web all up.

Why cause it's alittle hard to defend as a marine and alien there are 4 attack points, vent on one side one on the other and the 2 big entrances, the elevator one and the other door ya have to weld through if u don't have a jetpack etc.

For looks hive would have to be "Refinery Hive" on bast, why? to me it looks cool.

i forgot what map it is, but i like cargo bay...i don't even think that's what it's called. i just like it because there are 3 res nodes right there...bad thing is though, that is usually the first thing marines rush for.

    Best looking hive:

Feedwater. Just awesome. The water and all... Is not that good for gameplay (easily sieged from atmo). Though doing tons of DC's and OC's in the sewers underneath the feedwater in the water is kinda kewl, especially when you do them pretty much in the middle of the place. Almost impossible to siege. But anyway.

    Best hive for gameplay:

For some odd reason I like Maintenance in eclipse. I know it is kinda easy for marines to take over, but I still like it. It's not that easy to defend with buncha OC's, and if marines do an outpost there It's pretty easy to be destroyed. Even thought it's a pain in the butt to defend from jetpackers...

I much prefer playing aliens, and I have had some amazing fights in Satcom on both sides. The good thing about satcom is that its rather easy to get to, so when marines DO attack, there are always lots of aliens to make an epic fight. Its perfectly fine to have a hive which is open, so long as you have enough aliens to fill it.

Gameplay Hive : I'd prolly say Computer Core in ns_eclipse cuz it's interesting to defend as alien and also very cool to attack as marine. (And please dont say satellite cuz its the worst hive ever imo with this tunnel in front of the hive oh damn sucky hive :/)

Best looking Hive : I'm totally in love with the refinery Hive in ns_bast. It's huge and very nice to climb on =)

My favorite hive for gameplay is Tanith's Waste Processing (I think thats it... the one with the weldable vents and ladder to res node.)

Visually, I still love attacking a full loaded Refinery in HA with a GL.

    Gameplay - Engine in Bast

Lots of options and some good CQB versus Fades if you are based in the hive.

    Looks - Biodome in Origin

Wow, I'm surprised no one has really said this:

POWER SILO, for both looks and playability.

The fact that you can get in as both lerk and JP marine onto the ledges gives it great playability, and the structural asthetics of the hive are the bomb. Power Silo takes the cake, narrowly beating out Refinery

my most fav hive is feedwater hive. both its gameplay because it is infact hard to defend, and also the surroundings. I like hives which look darkish with water and infestation, makes it more realistic.

and also power silo i like how it has water and stuff. and the perches are excellent for lerks .. sadly also jps

powersilo is my pick for playability. you can assault it from 2 directions, or pick off enemies from the ceiling. and if the going gets tough you can always perform suicide by jumping into the waste.

visual-wise. i'd have to say refinery is the most visually stunning, but that hive has obvious problems listed by many before.

    Gameplay:
    The Short: PoweSilo.

The Long: The 2 reasonably sized, not too biased halls are nice, and the ledges definately add a good gameplay element to the battles that take place. For example, one of my most exciting gameplay experiences was Covert Ops JPing up there and taking it back with a Phase Gate/Siege Combo... Listening to the patrolling aliens MC in, squish around, and leave, biding my time trying not to catch anyones attention with building noises. Haha, I was so into it, I found myself whispering into voice comm "OMG, I'm up top at Power with a TF and soon to be siege, get ready to Phase in when it starts", like they could here me if I wasn't quiet. That was f***in sweet

My only problem would be that it needs some kind of alternate exit for aliens, preferably one that would allow them to circle around quickly for more intense and exciting battles. The design, in terms of Massive Battles, forces non-flanking, head to head fighting, which could be spiced up with better alien vent maneuverability, imo.

As far as Visuals, I'll pull back to my first day playing NS, when I saw all the maps for the first time.

    The Short: Vent 3-C, Refinery.

The Long: I can't deny the awe I felt in my first game of NS, walking into Refinery with 1 other Marine on the lower level... that was just sweet. BUT, after playing more I have to favor Vent 3-C. The first time I walked through the underworks of Vent, I truely felt like I was being transported to some eerie, gritty place... and of course, the big fan is sweet. It had close to the same "awe" effect, but I appreciate the design and theme-keeping better.
