Marathon was one of the most amazing games I've EVER played. It was essentially Doom, but with an incredible storyline that's only been rivaled (IMO) by Deus Ex, System Shock, and Planescape: Torment.

The game was SO popular when it was released in 1994 that even today people are still finding new plot twists and information in the game, which is being posted at http://marathon.bungie.org/story.

Unfortunately, the only Marathon game to make it to the PC was Marathon 2: Durandal, which sucked so much that it almost counteracted the original Marathon's greatness.

Here's some screenshots:

Also i have to say that the PC version of Marathon 2 SUCKED **** compared to the Mac version of Marathon 2. I mean the maps were completely different it was just a stupid move by Bungie to change that game between PC and Mac versions.

That's what I was talking about when I said it sucked. The Mac version WAS good, but I don't think as much as the original.

The number 7 played a pretty big role in Marathon. That explains the counter, and a few other subtle jokes on the site.

Marathon was made by Bungie, the makers of Halo, and I remember reading the production diaries for Halo, and it referenced Marathon several times. Apparently, Halo takes place in the same universe as Halo. There have been a few correlations drawn, but the biggest link, for me, was one of the game creators saying it outright in a developer diary, which I cannot find right now, unfortunately.

Marathon is dropped into the same class as System Shock: games with incredible reviews, and look incredibly amazing for their time, but I may never have time to come back to and see for myself. Ah, were there but a few more hours in the day...

-Ryan!

I own all Marathons and tried to buy ares but never could afford it (was too busy buying RPGs from spiderweb entertainment).

Marathon and ares are mac games if I remember correctly.

p.s.: Marathon=pwn. Guns don't kill people, Pfhor do.

I've heard plenty about it. Supposedly is the Halo killer that was made by the same guys long ago. Never got to play, but I wish they'd put it out free- I'd love it

It's... not a Halo killer. Not at all. I don't know who would even say that, except jokingly. Marathon is (from what I hear) a great game, but it's so old that it's hard to find and hard to get working.

For its time and even now marthon owns Halo, defineatly.

It's really easy to find and easier to get working.

http://orbitalarm.bungie.org/downloads/alephone.html

You'll want the 'M1A1 for SDL v1.5 (Special Edition for Windows only)' - it's a (completely legal) conversion of Marathon to run on the open sourced Aleph One version of the Marathon engine.

The underlying game's incredibly old (almost as old as Doom itself), but has lots of familiar features - friendly NPCs ("they're everywhere!"), wall-mounted health rechargers, weapons with limited clip capacity, mouselook, proper 3D aiming...
• ElectricSheepElectricSheep Join Date: 2003-04-21 Member: 15716Members
The windoes version is bleh, heck Aleph One is bleh simply because it has a different physics model than the original Marathon making it impossible to grenades jump and thus get many secrets!!!

Ah, yes. Marathon. Probably best game I've ever played. Best storyline at least.
