well you must likely created a lan game. go to internet games and then create game. it should be there because you were trying to create a lan game where the computers must be manually hooked up to each other. you should also have a good connection so you get low pings (which will be fixed in 1.1) and make a dedicated server if you know how otherwise dont.

hmmm i believe there is a command in a NS directory which makes it public game or not. i would highly suggest tryin the server operators forum. they should know this... i hope <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

There was a bug in version 1.0 that set the variable sv_lan to 1 even if you were setting up an internet server.
Simply have him go to console and type sv_lan 0 and you *should* be able to connect.
If you or your friend haven't done it yet, you should probably run the 1.04 patch on your systems to play an updated version when either of you are hosting.
