...
Just been playing on a server i often frequent, cause i like the players there and it's usually a pretty good standard of play. But i just had to quit this time. Be it partly for the fact i'm hungover as hell and got a bit of a dodgy neck, but i need to ask this. What is your definition of voice spam.
Apparently me and another player were voice spamming by discussing tactics for the match and so on. When i say discussing, i mean stating things like "right, i'm gorging, heading to sewer". That kind of thing. Things i've +never+ been accused of spamming for saying before. Actual helpful things that let your team know what you're doing so they can help. But no. Apparently this was too much and made some of their obviously elitist clanners lose their concentration and die. Sorry, but that is total BS. For one thing i've picked up, in the start of a game as aliens you +know+ where the marines start, and from rushing in, you can tell pretty much where they are, and about 9 times out of 10, you're the ones surprising them. Also, another player (the other one "spamming") brought up a good point, since NS is a RTS game as well as FPS, you need to plan ahead for things right? Make sure that whatever action your enemy takes, you have a reaction to that so you don't lose a key res point, or hive and so on.
So on the request of these elitist pigs i started to type stuff. Guess what. I got killed sitting there typing that i think they're incoming to so and so room. Go figure. Since if i said it on voice comms, i could have quite happily been munching on the marine AND tell the team of the incoming threat. Also, typing doesn't work when you're dead (as in the "living" players can't see your messages). So what good is it to tell people of incoming marines which are most probably already at your hive and attacking it by the time you respawn?
Oh, and the other funny thing, one of the people complaining about us "spamming" started whining on voice comms that nobody was using teamwork. Mainly because he was too busy telling us to shut up so we couldn't quickly say "ok, two skulks with me to sewer" or something.
So as i said, in the end i was just getting far too irate and i had to leave before i told these people what i really thought.
So what are any of your views on this?

"If you think I've voice spamming, punch in toggleeditps, mute me, and have fun"
That is all, dont worry too much about it, the actions of idiots seldom take them far
probally just a bunch of CS n00bs... where voice spam is holding down the talk button for 2 seconds

These are the clanners whose server it is. So i had to hold my tongue. It's irritating really, since i really like the server and most of the other players.
You know the answer. You're not at fault, the guys who told you to stop spamming are idiots. Find another server.
There's really not a lot to this...

I also want to know how other people define voice spam as. This isn't a quest to make myself feel better than them, or in the right or whatever.
And, I do not know about you, but it gets a bit annoying when you are listening to steps etc. and two loud persons talk to discuss about their favorite chips and whats going on in the ice hockey match in television. Oh my gosh I am so looking forward for muting.
As for my "voice-spam" definiton, it's a guy who keeps on blabering stupid, childish or just annoying things, for one purpose only. To irritate other players and to "clog" the voice channell. I mean, you can't really talk about tactics if there is a guy shouting on the microphone. That is what i call spamming.
voice-spam: talking about chips and hocky games.
voice-spam: when i stutter so it takes me 15 seconds to say "marines inc to powersilo get there now!"
not voice-spam: announcing the presence or position or intent of ANY player on the server, ex: "fade heading to clear out stability monitoring" "marines inc to sewer!" "your gorge is busy in viaduct."
i think they key is to pack it with game relatede informtion....
discussing tactics is not spam, but if you talk TOO MUCH and HOG the voice comm then it pisses people off. just say what actually NEEDS to be said, and leave it at that. dont' leave your voicerecord button on all the damn time.
i for one actually enjoy some of the tunes that the voice spammers play. when you're aliens in a 2 hive lockdown there isn't much you can do especially since your team isn't that competent. here are some of my favorites:
piraty tune
can't touch this - MC Hammer
that Tetris tune
Zelda - Link's quest tunes (ah nostalgic!)
Zelda - Link to the past world map tune
Super Mario Brothers (more nostalgia!)
and many more...
and if you don't like the spam. toggleeditps
P.S. You can see what dead people are typing just as well as you can hear dead people talking, where did you get the idea that you couldn't?
From CS i think. It may just be the fact that people ignore me.
Me: 'B---hsmack, No Life, Mofoman' ###### WONID, serveradmin@bannage.com.
Me: I'm not gonna play these childish games with you. Takes me 30s to write an e-mail.
In other words don't sweat the little stuff. More then likely if you ignore them they will eventually stop but if they don't note their WONID and e-mail the server admin about them. I think as a game community we have the duty to try and preserve our servers from these insolent fools.
Think about it this way, I frequent about 5-6 different servers regularly. I've been playing NS since the release, so in about 6 months and I have gotten about 10 people actually banned from servers for spamming. That is at least 10 less idiots on the servers I play and I'm sure other people do it as well so together we are keeping our favorite servers fun and ****-free. Sounds pretty logical eh.
If you let them totally get to you and you spend the whole round typing to them you are playing their game. Warn them once, and do what you know what your sever admin would want you to do. They might not ban them immediately but at least they know of them.
"I think there is a skulk near me. I heard that clicking noise. You know the one that sounds like fingernails tapping against a desk? That can get really annoying. I hate annyoing people. Don't you? Yeah they totally suck. Ah crap I just died."
But I think saying "Gorging at Sewer" is ok. But saying "Putting up res at so-and-so" isn't needed. Just tell them every three nozzles where the prev three were located.
I think I'll change my online name to "Radio Spammers Must Die Castrated" or summat.
I respectfully disagree.
I'd like to know where my gorge is when he leaves the protective confines of the Hive, especially on pubs where they might not have an escort. If the gorge doesn't have voice all he may be able to hammer out is "Help" in text. In that situation if he reported where he was building I could go to his assistance right away, if he didn't say anything before hand I wouldn't know where to go.
As gorge I will lay out a lose plan while I'm collecting for the 1st Node;
Me: Build Plan AUX>3 DC>SHIP>VENT>Sav4Hive.
I then report my status;
Me: omw2Aux
Me: @aux
Me: auxRTdone
I don't fill up the damn screen with useless text, just enough to let my team know what I'm doing, where I'm going, when I'm vulnerable (Building/Saving out of Hive).
Gorges are important if didn't already know.
Otherwise, anything that can be said using teamchat should be said using it. If you're in combat, or have a VERY time sensitive message, use voice. Otherwise, you're probably preventing anyone with something vital to say from using it.
Don't report every little thing, I want to be able to ambush those marines with my ears to help defining if I can drop now or half a second later.
If only I could find the command that removed the "universal volume lowering" that kicks in when someone is using his voicecomm(would also solve the bug with people seemingly having their button stuck or something.)
I use voice comm frequently. "one to sewer, no 3!" "got 2, one's left building resnode in Vestibule"
"gorging in vent, will need skulk help in about 3 minutes"
etc. Planning strats is fine and dandy, as comm sometimes I will jump out the chair (I haven't bothered to bind a key to voicecomm just yet, I'll be doing that after writing in the forums), explain to them why I'm doing certain things, why I only gave 3 people waypoints (so that the others would stay in base), etc., finish building whatever it was that I hopped out to build, then jump back in.
As for singing, chatting about the game before, playing music, or talking about your life, that can all be considered voice spamming, although some of those are much more annoying that other forms.
use voice... but be brief... don't sing unless you're absolutely kicking their ****
As far as the precise server/situation in the original post, well I suppose like you said it's their server so you've got to go by their rules. Perhaps find another server.
but in your case dude, those are just a$$hole clanners. i've played cs once where i said in voice" Enemy spoted", and the guy said SUYF stop spamming the mic.
so ya some people are just little shizes :/
