a moving model of a thick infestation
Mapping req:
can someone make a model of "thick" infestations that move, perhaps creep out and then go back? something like a thick blanket that pulses? a "blob" perhaps?
There's other ways of doing it without resorting to models. Remember the jump blisters from HL SP? Those xen-like bumps on the ground that inflated and sent you skyward? No model there, just some clever map entities at work to make it puff up.
A model is probably the more visually appealing method, but it won't have a proper collision system. A puffing up blob will not actually push players around, so it will look like they're clipping into it.
That jump effect needs at least 5 entities. Animated infestation Textures need at least 5 times more texture Memory (and Flay says stay below 4 mb). Models just need e_poly and much work, once created they are unflexible and repetitive.
Im still waiting for the map ns_origin that includes the fungus-plant:
yes, you would have to clip it, but it still would look like players are clipping into it, or players are hovering over it. so what? i know you don't get perfection in HL engine....
i just thought this would be a way around some NS limits, the texture and the entitys. animated pumping wall textures eat texture limits, and making them move with entitys eats those limits. i was hoping a model would solve the problem.
my mental concept was the thick fungus scum i found in my frig, jiggled on liquid base - and then i flashed back to the old movie "the blob".
so it could be something that sits in place and pumps like a heart, or a slimy blob that moves in a small circle. i was going to put a presence entity over it targetting a trigger hurt, so if a human touched it or got next to it he would be hurt. (yeah, i know, 2 more entitys.) i am sure your artisitic imagination can outdo anything i could.
i CAN do without it, not crucial, but i thought i would ask. decor/surprise helps. but if it is a no, that is ok too.
oh, and ollj, that is a nice mushroom. but i never saw it before - did you release it in the mapping forum so people know it is out there?

My guess is, he's asking for it for a map he's doing. (; Don't be so quick to jump, guys.
tommy: we're gonna need more info for what effect you're trying to get, exactly. Right now you're asking for something a little too vague.
Provide us with more details about what exactly you want.
