Nem, don't go there <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
It's a stupid comic that got censored (use google to look for it if you want) for a stupid reason by stupid people.
Sign a petition, email the people (I did both) read penny arcade or the banned comic, I don't care, just thought I'd mention this.

It is my experience that most of the time on teh net the people who can draw aren't funny, and the people who are funny cannot draw.
"fruit f***er"
"I like my beanbag, but I really love tribes"
"cardboard tube samurai"
just to name a few gags that will stay with me for a lifetime
anyways... word up SPOKANE WA!
and if you don't know about it this is why they were asked to take it down:

Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter. We note that the
cartoon has been removed.
I am receiving a good amount of e-mails from the penny-arcade subscribers
asking why American Greetings asked you to pull the cartoon. Unfortunately I
do not have the resources to respond to them individually so I am passing
the answer on to all of you. On April 17, 2003, American Greetings received
a complaint about the cartoon namely that it was "creepy" and "offensive."
Thereafter, we asked you to remove it.
Note that the target audience for Strawberry is young females (indeed young
children). And we do receive complaints from parents and the like over
cartoons like yours.
So there you have it.

Yeah, right. Lets make derogatory pictures about a company that could really annoy some people, and then when they censor us, lets call it <i>stupid</i>.
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->It is sort of a pain in the ****, though, which this strip revealed as we tried to write it. So, can we even use the names of companies? Well, clearly. At least, I think. But, what about the logo - is that fair game? Maybe not. I don't actually know. Also, I don't want to run each strip by a lawyer to find out if we're talking about some kind of legal conflict, where Gabe and I have to fight lawyers and also a lion in an crumbling ancient colosseum. But it gets more problematic.
Have you heard that old saw where somebody says that "children today recognize less than ten plants, but over a thousand corporate logos"? Putting aside the fact the logos have the name of the company on them and plants typically don't, you're supposed to be just shocked by that plants/logos thing, and I've just never been able to muster the indignation over it. Here's where it starts to get tricky: when I want to tell people where something is, I don't tell them to look for the largest poplar, so it doesn't matter if they can recognize its tulip-shaped leaves. I tell them to turn right at the Texaco. Or the Pizza Pipeline. Or Jack In The Box. They actually determine geography. I actually can't describe my surroundings without using these brands.
I can hardly have thoughts without utilizing brands. So, American McGee's creative propensities amuse us. What would happen if he turned his dark gaze on one of those sweet girls' toys from the eighties, like Rainbow Brite or Sweet Secrets or My Little Pony? No, I've got it: Strawberry Shortcake. Counting American McGee, a single train of thought requires no less than five products. Look at Penny Arcade, for Christ's sake. I can't even express concepts without leveraging some organization's coveted intellectual property. In the case of the now infamous strip, it wouldn't have made sense to use anything but a commonly known product. So now that these **** characters and concepts and products are completely intrinsic to our language and thought processes, they are, in fact, inextricable, they can effectively police speech. I'm not even trying to make a value judgement about that. I'm simply amazed by it. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Did you read the news post for that comic? Ever?
They're commenting on American McGee (or whoever it was), the creators of Alice, that twisted game based on a popular children's story. Look it up, it's not 6 years old (I hope not, I'm not that old). They're planning on making another game based on a popular children's story. I can't remember which.. Goldilocks, Snow White... It doesn't matter. Penny Arcade's comic is a parody/satire of what the abovementioned <b>gaming</b> company is doing. PA was not targeting American Greetings.
/me stops ranting.
<b>Drunken</b> panda attack, so much more deadly.

Too late. Much too late <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
The whole 'American Greetings' thing only proves one old maxim of mine once more: "People suck."
The Wizard of Oz.
Oh yeah, were it not for PA, I would have never heard about NS until after 1.0
So there!
Its done by Threeboy, who used to map and texture for CS back in the day...when it was balanced and not full of cheaters. He also does some ubza web design.
I agree with Nem here. I spend a good 10-15 minutes reading comics every day myself, both webcomics and syndicated ones on the web. I never understood why so many people seem to limit themselves to only a few. By that, I'm not meaning limit themselves to a few cause they only find a few funny, but rather limit themselves to a few like a friend of mine who refuses to even read Megatokyo because "he's a PA fan." I don't see what that has to do with not reading MT. I don't remember there being an exclusive reading policy at PA or anything.
Onto the topic of PA and their current situation. I personally don't find their "Tart" comic funny. I still think its bs that they were forced to remove it though. Last I checked satire and parody were protected under US law, but I'm no lawyer so that may have changed. In response to Relic's post, I too have "no", and I mean "no" respect for Gabe and Tycho. All my experience with them from what their news posts and the way they run their forums make them seem like jerks to me. But, I do admit to finding their comic very funny. PA is the only comic where I dislike the authors, yet love the comic. Quite odd to be honest.
[edit] edited for typos and clarity [/edit]
I personaly don't read PA (never really liked it) I do read (<a href='http://www.somethingpositive.net' target='_blank'>S*P</a>, <a href='http://www.megatokyo.com' target='_blank'>MT</a>, <a href='http://www.dilbert.com/' target='_blank'>Dilbert</a>, <a href='http://www.dorktower.com/' target='_blank'>Dork Tower</a>, <a href='http://www.queenofwands.net/' target='_blank'>Queen of wands</a>, Flem(R Rated, no linkeh), <a href='http://kungfool.transpect.net/index.php' target='_blank'>KungFool</a>(it aint that good but meh, he got me hooked), <a href='http://www.kenzerco.com/periodicals/kodt/kodtonline_current.php' target='_blank'>Knights Of The Dinner Table</a>, SexyLoosers(again R), and <a href='http://www.machall.com/' target='_blank'>MacHall</a>
yah, I do like em <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> and I hate seeing anyone getting hit by cesors for stuff like that, sorta silly
then agian I do love Alice (wonderful game) and hope Oz is good also <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
(oh the other 3 links are NS forums(duh), PHL(duh), and www.mpogd.com (I like 'em:))
best comic ever
(well ... not so much today. Usually it makes less sense and is thereby better. Today was far too coherent to be funny.)
<a href='http://www.machall.com' target='_blank'>MacHall</a>
<a href='http://www.megatokyo.com' target='_blank'>MegoTokyo</a>
Drowtales looked like it'd be good, but the site's UGLY. And what's wrong with screwing up a childrens story? It's not like they play any of American McGee's games. And who's whiney enough to care?
Mozilla's bookmark groups and tabs are the best invention in the world
my daily routing of reading webcomics is:
<click>
while ( comic >= 0 )
{
read comic--
}

That's before disney and lovely mindbenders thought fairy tales should be all happy and flowery and funky and lovely and have no genitals and only kiss when married and sleep in seperate beds!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Second, I didn't find the initial comic all that great, either, but agree to some extent on the subject: McGee didn't exactely create a stellar game with Alice, and I agree with Gabe that the equation 'Fairy Tale + Gibs = Quality' is a little shortened. There's a difference between dark atmosphere and dark colored textures.
Third, no matter whether the comic was good or not, the fact remains that it's nobodys business to censor it.
That's why the censorship didn't really make sense to me.
I don't ever recall expressing hate for anyone. Nope. Just re-checked my post. Nothing there about hate at all. All I said was that I lost respect for Gabe as an artistic critic.
