Right-click on the shortcut, go to properties, and add -game ns to the end of the text in the target box. For example, it might look like C:\Sierra\Half-Life\hl.exe -console -game ns

There are a whole bunch of command line parameters you can use with Half-Life. The one you're looking for is, of course, -game ns. All mods (except for vanilla HL itself) specify what mod they want to be set up by using that parameter. By the way, you don't actually have to open HL with the -game parameter set to a mod to play that mod - it will activate if you try to join a game of that type.

A few other useful parameters are:

-console - enables the console
-numericping - shows you your pings on the in-game browser as numbers as well as those green\brown dots.
-noipx - if you aren't playing HL over a network using IPX protocol (you probably aren't), you can switch this on to tell HL to not even bother trying. I think it frees up a bit of memory, or saves time, or something like that.
-nojoy - disables the joystick, so that HL doesn't waste time loading joystick related stuff
-nosound - disables sound. This might be useful if you're using something like Roger Wilco and your soundcard is finickey, and won't work while HL still has sound.
-nointro - removes the Valve and Sierra intro thingies. I think -console might do this anyway.

That's not what I meant. You actually don't even have to switch using the custom game menu. If you fire up vanilla HL, go to multiplayer game, internet game, filter for NS and attempt to join an NS server without switching the game to NS, it will automatically switch to NS. It works for any other mod as well. The only reason for the "-game ns" is so that you see the nice splash screen, and have the menu options and sounds changed.

RECOMMENDED: use -dev instead of -console, then you won't have to hit esc to get rid of the mini-picture of the main menu when you create a game. Though you will need to disable cheats then, sv_cheats 0... and, if you don't like developer mode, developer 0.

You can try launching HL and going through the custom games thing.

well he was saying that was getting annoying so he just wants a shortcut. ive never tried Vanilla HL but i might give it a try. another command you forgot was -32bpp (i think thats right) that enables HL to run in 32 bit mode but if you dont have a fairly decent video card then i wouldnt do it so you can get beter FPS.

Or you could use The All Seeing Eye which is a far better bet all round.

you can always put dev 0 and cheats 0 in your autoexec...

I didn't know that one actually.. thanks. It work with all mods I suppose?

yeah that picture of the menu in the upper left after staring a lan game is annoying. I always launch maps through the console now and use sv_cheats 1 to start the game for testing. If you want to run around any of the maps it is a lot easier and quicker to open the console and load the map that way ('map mapname') rather than going through the lan game process. You also avoid that menu overlay problem.

Here's a list of all commandline commands
-console - enables the console
-32bpp - enables 32-bit colors
-numericping - replaces the green-yellow-red ball-ping with actual numberic ping
-nojoy - disables joystick saving some time and memory if you don't use joystick
-noipx - same as above but for IPX
-heapsize XXX - tells Half-life to allocate XXX kb memory, might increse your performance, mostly works as well without it, but you can give it a try
-game XXX - starts the mod with the directory name of XXX
+XXX - issues XXX console command at startup
