Just Reinstalled Windows...

<div class="IPBDescription">help....</div> Okay, just put in a new MB, CPU and memory. Registry had no chance, so I reinstalled windows ME (C drive).

Now all the start menu shortcuts are gone - no problem - but the half-life and NS executables seem all over the place. Half-life tells me that it is out of date (v 1.1.1.0), but there isn't an update available?! NS can be found in the custom game list, but there are *two* instances listed, both of which are v1.03?! Only one of these seems to have servers running.

Proir to all this I had the latest HL and NS v1.04.

What's going on. Please don't say I have to reinstall HL and NS from scratch <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

what you have to do is:

    1) Reformat your HD

    2) install a decent OS (2K/XP)

look, you basicaly just screwed your self over by doing a non clean install, and totop it off with its XP.
When ever you install an Windows OS you really SHOULD do a reformat at the same time, the update to OSxxx dosn't work, and slaping a second copy ontop of an existing one is just sorta not good.

To top this off you are running ME. Though many people manage to run ME with no problems, I have also seen and been told about ME doing anything from making everything Bork (just not run properly) to literaly destroying HDs.

I have never installed an OS with out a reformat, but what I am guessing is that it wipes out the registry, and thus severly borks HL (HL relies heavily on the registry).

So yah, my suggestion, though you don't have to follow it and could (an shold) wait for more oppinions is this:
Grab your Spool of CDrs and start burning all important files and backups
    reformat
reinstall (preferably with a more stable OS)

    GL

    oh and random points:
all of the 1.0x patches are not needed for clients they are server side only (1.1 is the first client patch)
Saying your copy of HL needs updating is also a comon bug but I don't think it is that one, it is probably from the reinstall.

    oh well

    Good Luck

    you need it <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    unfortunatly not.

Both 2K and XP made segnificant advances of 98 (yes I ussed 98SE untill just a few years ago b/c it was the mos stable)
both 2K and XP are much more stable, and face fewer problems when trying to get stuff to work for them.

I did do a clean install on top of a format. That's not my problem, Windows is fine, its the half-life I'm talking about - must I reinstall that?

The v1.04 seems fine tbh - it's just *called* v1.03 for some reason.

    was this the proces:

    1) reformat HD
    2) reinstall (shudder) ME
    3) reinstall software (including HL and NS)
    ??
or did you simply copy Dirs back and forth with CDs or something?

    To summarize the above:

IMO: If you indeed wish to have a smooth running game of NS or HL ever again, yes, you will have to reinstall HL and NS again.

It is possible to copy directories back and forth, but this will nearly always lead to some complications <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

But I don't see any reason why you just can't use the hL.exe => ?

Actually I have had the same HL directory for the last 2.5 years. I keep my system and data files on separate partitions. I have probably reloaded my OS 5-6 times (or more) in that time period (from Win9x->W2K->XP). Everything is working perfectly for me. You just have to enter the CD-Key after each reload (as the key is stored in the registry).

Well you SHOULD format all HD's and reinstall everything although it's possible to just reinstall windows
And for the love of god throw away ME
    hehe

Reformat all HD's? Why the heck would you have to reformat drives/partitions that just contain data? That's terrible advice.

But I do agree that Windows ME is the worst OS I have ever seen. What a joke it was/is.

    OK
What I meant is formatting all drives that contain programs
Cause they add a lot to the registry and ini files etc so thus if you just reinstall windows you'll lose the registry entries and a lot of programs will just be plain screwed
You COULD just back up the registry but if you're making a clean install of windows the old reg entries is often one of the things you wanna get rid of...
