...that's where it all began
...and no, it's not over yet.

For those of you who didn't witness the tearful farewell in #naturalselection, I decided today to reinstall Windows. Step 1 was format my C: drive; no problem. Step 2, install Windows 98 - no problem. Step 3: configure my ethernet card, connect to the internet, and download the necessary drivers.

...yeah, problem. I *thought* I'd copied my ethernet card drivers to a disk. Turns out what Windows calls 'drivers' aren't in fact what it looks for to install drivers. Sooo I can't get to the internet. And therefore can't install anything else, including HL and the playtest. I'm currently running in 16 colors at 640x480 because I can't get to my video card drivers.

So I'm stuck on my girlfriend's iMac until I see my PC-using friend this evening, at which point he will give me the drivers to hopefully bring my ethernet card back to life. Wish me luck... playtesters, have fun tonight. Hopefully I will be among you soon.

Ouch. This is why I always make sure I've got the CD's and floppy's necessary to install every last thing I'll need before I even think of formatting. Not that this does any good for you. Good luck on fixing it up!

Oh come, coil, that's half the fun ;)

Well, granted I *did* have a whole 650MB CD-RW stocked with drivers, HL patches (like I'm going to wait at Fileplanet *again*? Psshya!), and of course all my personal files that couldn't be re-downloaded or re-installed.

And, I didn't have any trouble installing any of it... :-( Oh well I wish you luck! And I hope you get it back online in time to get some play(test)ing in :)

Ahh... the old I need drivers to get on the net, I can only get the drivers from the net doozie.

Like the mouse drivers for my Linux box, I need to use the mouse to operate the GUI to install the correct drivers so it will recognise... my mouse.

I've got a handy little utility installed which makes dealing with broken Windows installations a lot less stressful.

Good luck, hope you won't need it anymore.

I recently migrated to a new PC - it was the very first major change I went through that didn't involve crashes, driver shortage and grey hair.

    Good Luck

But uh, why cant you just install the drivers for the ethernet card from the disk or CD that came with it?

I recentally installed an 80 gig ata133 7200RPM HD to my comp and installed XP on it. Argh what a mess. None of my D3D games work as well as they used to, even with the supposed godsend of the detonator drivers.

My greatest sympathy to you coil, not only because your computer is buggered, but moreso the fact that you were forced to use a Mackintosh *Shudder*

    He didn't have CD's because his PC is a little over 4 years old. It's a P2 266...

The computer came factory-loaded... that combined with its age means I didn't have a lot of installation CDs. Anyway, I've gotten the drivers from a friend (whose computer I'm currently using), and hopefully after some movies and boozin' tonight, all will be fixed and reinstalled. Pray for me. (:

not to anyone who has recently installed their OS:

check to see what the chipset is on your motherboard, and download the drivers for them accordingly. most likely youll get a gigantic performance increase over using the microsoft ones.

the biggest one is via, the speed increase is crazy using the latest version of the 4in1 drivers. take my word for it.
