Similar graphical style to metroid prime?

When I saw the new NS screens it really reminded me a bit of Metroid Prime for the GameCube. Metroid Prime, also about alien hunting and the dev team has some Valve employees, also has a futuristic style with moody and sometimes alien-enviroments. I know that you guys didn't look at MP when you designed NS. What I'm asking is: Did you use the original Metroid games as inpiration for the graphics, aside from movies like Predator?

Metroid Prime screens (the game, with cool shading, animated lightning, very cool particles and more looks much better in movies/motion).

metroid was being started after ns. Metroid was started about 5 months ago...this should be in off topic too

I know that, my question was about the original Metroid. And it's not off-topic, it's about NS.

edit: and the development started BEFORE E3 2001, so more than a year ago.

I dunno if the dev team was influenced per se by Metroid, but I definitely agree that there's a lot in common in terms of the atmosphere.  Just play Super Metroid when you first touch down on the planet Zebes.  It looks empty and deserted, but you know something bad is around.

Woo hoo! Chick with blaster! Always loved Ms. Aran.

I think its more a case of Metroid and NS being two good ideas that use similar premises... Infested place that'ss kinda spooky, in a cinematic sort of way.

Yes, anyone here who isn't looking forward to Metroid Prime should be ashamed of themselves.

Beyond that, I don't think that there's too much of a similarity besides what Rhoads pointed out.  I mean, fundamentally, these are two completely different games.

As far as the HUD stuff/interface in NS, I can give you a definite "no" if you are asking if they were influenced by anything related to Metroid.  Until you posted screens, I have never seen anything relating to that game.

Relic, it's not really the gameplay. it's more the atmosphere I'm getting at.

I too confess to having never heard of this game before this post. Thusly you can conclude that ns_hera is not influenced by this game at all <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

So who does that leave? ...Cory?

I don't think you'll find NS is influenced by MP in the slightest.

Gotta say, I loved the old nintendo version of Metroid, but that was a looong time ago.  I'm pretty positive that game was the furthest thing from my mind when designing any NS related artwork.  So many other sources of inspiration I could site, but Metroid isn't one of them.

Agreed.  I know nothing of this game, though I too loved Metroid back in the day.

I think you can safely say that NS was influenced in no significant way by it.

Well, in my opinion, Super Metriod for SNES was the best SNES game ever. Seroisly, it rocked so much, and yes i was a huge SNES fan.
