Ahhh! It's A Skulkling!

<div class="IPBDescription">My attempt on a zergling model 56k!!!</div> Today I was bored so I decided to try and model a zergling for the starcraft-NS theme. So, I started out and trashed my first few attempts. I couldn't produce anything that was similar to what i wanted. Then I loaded the skulk model into HLMV to try and get some references to size and shape and I realized that the skulk looks quite similar to the zergling. So I loaded the skulk model into milkshape and started a major hackjob, altering it until I rendered something similar to a zergling (sort of). Behold THE SKULKLING. <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->

    ummm... kinda looks like a zergling.. but it's a cool model none the less! i myself am going to wait for the other one tho. but hey! nice job anyway! i'd use it instead of the skulk i got now. i'm getting bored with all my models..

    Woah.

    We now have a "new" Zergling model!

    New running anims, new skin, and you're looking at pure, 100% secks. Excellent work. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    You know, in each cinematic/screenshot the Zergling looks slightly or much different than other versions.

    This zergling looks almost accurate to what we have in-game of Starcraft, but you have missed the 2 long sickles on its back. maybe you should add those so the back doesn't look so plain?

    Wow, thanks for all the great feedback. I really don't know how to skin from scratch so if anyone wants to skin this beast just ask. And I was wondering, do you guys want me to model those arms that come out of the zerglings back or leave it the way it is? Thanks.

    The head shield thing shouldn't be so far down, actually. It's also a bit long.
  • BlaqWolfBlaqWolf Join Date: 2002-10-28 Member: 1667Members
    the things coming out of his back will make him more fierce!

    of course you should add them!

    oh, and what xanieth said... make the head shield higher
  • therougeknighttherougeknight Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 6379Members
    Should the apendages be sickles or arms?
  • BlaqWolfBlaqWolf Join Date: 2002-10-28 Member: 1667Members
    i think they're arms arent' they? well you got sickles down there alread... so you should make them arms. unless you're scrapping the sickle things?
  • XaniethXanieth Join Date: 2002-11-06 Member: 7280Members
    Back appendages = secondary arms with claws used to kill more efficiently. To put it bluntly, it makes them more awesome.

    I'm not sure how close this is to Blizzards initial vision of the zergling, but it can clearly be seen that the zergling runs on four legs and attacks with the 2 spiked 'arms' on its back.

    And about your model, it looks mostly ok exept the place where the tusks join with the mouth, it looks to thin. It looks like the tusks would fall off if it tried to bite anything...

    i think u should add a pair of small arms instead of sickles,
    first, it looks cooler and fiercer , second, it will produce variety.
    other than the missing small arms on the back, it looked pretty close to the zergling of the rendered version in
    SC manual. I like it , nice job <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
    u might also want to lengthen the tail just a tiny bit.
    i can animate it if u want, ( when the model and skin is done )

    Why does everyone wanna make SC models from the manual renders??? I think you should just use the picture that broode has. That one is great.
  • Pvt_HudsonPvt_Hudson Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2019Members
    one more thing, on it's back, there should be at least 2 -3 pieces of distinct carapace, on your model u only have one big piece. I have circled the part in the pic below.
    u can see how it should be from Broode's picture.

    what's wrong with manual renders? i think they look the coolest.
    and if u look in the game closely, those are the closest ref to the actually in game image.

    although the version in broode's picture is official blizzard work, it looks too fat. and it's front legs / claws look like they belong to a mammal, not a fierce beast. just my 2 cents.

    i found a pretty good picture on the internet.

    Broodes picture: wild boarish
    Hudsons picture: dogish

    I like hudsons more, I just played SC and realized that they had claws not giant blades, and of course hudsons picture shows that again. I still like the SC:Ghost Ultralisk and Mutalisk more.

    lol I love the idea of a skulk/zergling hybrid..... thou the "skulkling" looks quite strange with that skin.

    maybe if you change it a bit, I'd look much better. but I must say.... that's really no bad work at all. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Of all the zergling pictures I've seen so far, I like Hudson's the best. Please use it as a reference if you're going to make a zergling model!

    the version in my picture is the actual starcraft in game version, ( also the rendered version in the manual ), that's why u guys like it so much, because we all see it in every session of starcraft gameplay <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    i'd like to point out one more thing, your model's BACK legs needs some work. They look too thin and fragile.
    if u look at the SC in game image or my picture above, u will see that those back legs should be bigger , a little longer, and stronger, since they need to support the whole body when the zergling is slashing with it's front sickle like claws ( and of course with it's pair of smaller claws on the back ) .

    i really like to see this baby in action, can't wait <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Hey guys, I redid for the most part the entire model. Putting in new faces instead of vertex editing. Here's an updated version...

    By God I think you've cracked it. And there I was looking for more reference pics for you. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Edit: What's the polycount?

    Excellent excellent hack job.

    Though, my worry is that this thing may need a new skeleton. I don't know how you're going to animate those dorsal appendages.
  • therougeknighttherougeknight Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 6379Members
    1780 polys. A bit more tweakage... Legs are farther apart now...

    OMG, excellent work!!!!! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    since u use the flat shade, we can clearly see the 2 black faces on the outer side of the back legs, please correct that. Other than that, IT IS PERFECT !!!!

    Don't worry about it, i have the new skeleton all planned out. I will take care of the animation.
    ( Well, unless therougeknight wants to animate it himself ) <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Nice job! That really does look like a zergling. But I'd suggest making the hind legs somewhat thinner and moving the arms on his back so that they're on top of the shoulder and not the neck.
