Yep... Do what the Com tells you... Unless you know for a fact, that there are 10 skulks waiting for some random marine to build that Phase Gate the Commander droped in Cargo Bay Foyer, and the only help you have is a guy who couldn't hit the broad side of a hive with his pistol.

(True story... despite my protests, my Ally went in, and sure enough, the 10 skulks that I told the commander about jumped down from the ceiling and killed him... then they got me, and the gorge started his WOL.)

I'd like to add another survival tip. If you're in your base and a skulk runs in, point your gun at him and pull the trigger. Repeat as necessary.

Tempting though it may be to have the entire team crowd around one building....

This is not true. The first thing that you have to remember is, BE A SOLDIER.

This means you follow orders by your superior officer (I.E. commander) to the letter. But you do NOT follow orders like a robot. You are the one in the field, and you have to make personal field decisions. As Trent said, if the comm tells you to build something ontop of 10 skulks, than he is an idiot. However, if you think you could better command the troops and make decisions, than DO IT. Natural selection needs good commanders as much as it needs good soldiers.

I disagree with you. You may be a soldier, but you must be willing to 'die' for your commander. Hesitation could ruin it for everyone. Sure, you don't have to be a robot. However, if the commander says "Build that phase gate" even though there are 10 skulks nearby, it is not your job to stop what you are doing and argue the point. You may not be saying this in your post. You, as a soldier, only see the 90 degree view in your screen. You don't see the backup that is nearby, or the health packs that are ready to spawn nearby, or the fact that the 10 skulks you think you saw really are 2 noisy ones.

Obviously what you say is true Medhead, but that's not what I'm trying to imply in my post. You should be willing to sacrifice yourself for the commander as long as it is in the benefit of the entire team, but not if it's a needless sacrifice. You shouldn't second guess the commander by assuming that there are ten skulks and that you have no backup. However if you play on public servers, you know that there are commanders who have marines shouting about ten skulks, but decide to drop a resource tower anyway. In that case, a soldier should use his better judgement to not fight a battle they already lost, but instead regroup and try to fight one that they can win.

Don't do what the commander says blindly. Do as he wants with as much caution as it takes without being a wuss. Don't blindly run into a room just to die because your commander told you to. Do your orders in a smart manner. Blindly following orders leads to death.

"Do what your commander says" is very easy to follow. But why do you listen to the guy who has just gotten you killed repeatedly by getting you to assault a hive? And he never gives you weapons and healthpacks...

Despite all these things the commander is in a very unique position. He's not busy worrying about a skulk popping out of a vent and killing him, or running out of health and ammo. He's a bit more free to look at the big picture. Maybe he's not giving you HMG's because he's busy building a secret turret factory with sieges to take out the other hive, and you're the distraction. Or he's just looking to push an injured alien force back with superior respawn times. There are bad commanders, but until you've sat in the command chair and commanded a few times (or are Very Experienced despite not having commanded much) it's difficult to tell.

The point is, the commander has a much greater perspective on what is going on than someone in the field. He's the big picture guy. He manages. You are his underlings and must do as he tells you in order to create coherent forces with a strategy. This leaves you free to decide on the how part of his task. "Attack the hive" has a lot of different ways of accomplishing it.

Also, since the commander is focusing on the big picture he may not notice little things. Feel free to point these things out - and I don't mean point out that you need jp/HMG at base commander. If you're killing a lot of lerks, this means they may have a lot of resource nodes. Your commander won't necessarily notice this. If a key building is injured, he might not notice that either. This sort of thing requires a judgement call on your part. Is it worth it to delay the accomplishment and distract your commander by mentioning this? It's up to you to decide.

The commander is the brain, and you are his hands, his ears, and his eyes. This is not a deathmatch. Follow your commander and use your head. You may just live to tell your tale.
