Dropships

considering that the marines in all our maps are part of the same crew, would they not have fairly similar vehicles?  perhaps we could make a few different dropship prefabs that everyone could put in their maps.  (well, i'm not putting on in mine...)  it seems kinda odd to have a billion different vehicles just for one little crew like these guys...

Sounds like it would be a nice feature for mappers to use... but I'm not sure it would be worth the effort for the first release. I mean, considering that hardly any levels (that are being playtested) would actually have any use for one. Hera is the only map with an actual outdoors "landing pad" in it.

I think it's always been a false assumption that there ever will be dropships in NS. Or at least that they will be the norm. I really doubt you'll see much of ANY dropships in the game. (I could be wrong, I'm really just making an educated guess here...)

If you ask me, dropships (which aren't an actual "part" of the map), don't really even fit in with the atmosphere. Would work on hera... but that's about it.

    *shrugs*

    Just my opinion...

Ok, I suppose that there are (quite) a few community maps that are going to have outdoors landing pads in them (which is actually discouraged)... but if I take a look at the levels that look like they are actually going to be finished in time for the first NS release... Only one of them could even put it to use. I mean, it would hardly even be possible in the rest.

So, back to my original point: Probably not worth it for the first release.

and cremator, there are a bunch of TSA marines. not just one squad. yer post made it sound like there were only like 10 or something.

I think by "the same crew," he means all part of the same division.  What this would do is lead to standard issue armor (check), weapons (check), etc... and probably to a small fleet of identical dropships to carry them into the fray.  So it would make a lot of sense that if a map showed the dropship on which the marines arrived, they'd all look the same.

coil hit my point dead on.

anyway, i did not realize that so few of the maps going official did not call for a dropship, i figured it was more of a standard.

    whatever...

I was under the impression that marines were phase-gated into the drop zone.  Dropships were an earlier idea, but I think that's been put on the back burner as teleporters are easier to code.  There may be standard dropship, just not in version 1.
