Forum Opinion: Official [*rel] Thread?

There have been complaints that this forum gets very cluttered with model requests, ideas, etc, and it's difficult to keep tabs on all of the released models.

To that end, what do people think of having a stickied topic precisely for model releases? Here's how it would work:
1) Each released model/pack/whatever would have one post, as made by the creator or distributor.
2) If a download is re-released as a new version, the original should be edited to say "check for re-release further down" or some such.
3) Each post would include the name of the pack, primary distributor/modeler, a *brief* description, NO PICTURES, and a link to a normal forum topic.
4) The normal, unstickied forum topic you create (as currently done - "[mrel]flowerpot o-chamber") would include more information, download location, screenshots, etc.
5) This would *not* be for requests or works-in-progress. Releases only.
6) I would delete or edit any post that did not fit the criteria.

Basically, it'd serve as a "directory" of sorts for people to more easily find a specific release. What do you guys think?

Sounds like a grand idea to me, so long as it was restricted to ONLY posts containing releases.

I think it's a good idea, but I could find any model in the forum, just use your head

Please dont do this, sifting through 50 pages of "ALIENS Ultimate Pack" will probably be the thing that finally makes blood shoot out my nose.

How about making a sub-forum in the Model forum.

    Main: Models
    -Req/ideas/concepts

    Subs: *Rel
    -Releases

Any news on making a model hosting service that runs off of the official site? Bandwidth issues? Copyright issues? It'd be a great way to support the modelling community, or it'll make so many problems it'll crash and burn (taking the mod with it )

We need a mrel sticky. Start off with the "Model and Skins Directory" thread and work up from there. With the proper monitoring, we're looking at an easily navigable one-stop shop for lots of high-quality models.

Sounds good to me, as long as there are no re-releases.

even a LINK from the main page would be awsome....
or even a lin from READY ROOM would be nice....

the stickie idea is second best to the sub-forum idea... go for it if you've got the contact/power to do it.

Model and Skins Directory... about 50 posts asking for a sticky.... one that never came...

I'm not too keen on this idea because of too much overhead to constantly update new versions of releases. Maybe a stickied request thread would be better?

I think a stickied "requests" thread is a much better idea really..

    1) Keeps forums from getting cluttered with request topics ( and lets face it, they are at the minute..)
    2) No matter how insane your suggestion, it stays on the front page. No need for bumping.
    3) Modellers who are right out of ideas can read it, see if anything sounds like a good idea.
    4) It'll be far easier to find models anyway, once the requests are all in the same place..

You should make "[Mrel]" sticky and a "model pack" sticky, to keep them both seperate. Models and reskins go in [Mrel], while packs go into the other one. You would also have to monitor each of them to make sure it's just releases, and not discussions or comments.

The problem with an mreq sticky is that it'll always have four or five discussions going on at the same time, criss-crossing over each other. It'd be a nightmare to read and probably not something anyone without a lot of time to spare would go near.

However, a mrel thread, properly moderated so that (a) only posts containing releases were made, (b) if an updated model is posted, the original post is edited with perhaps a link to the new post, and © dead links are deleted, would work an awful lot better.

Though think it should maybe take on more of the form of the "Models and Skins Directory", i.e. people still make release threads as we do now (how else are modellers going to get feedback and suggestions?) and with every new release a post is added to the mrel/directory thread. (edit: which upon rereading coil's post is the original idea anyway, pretty much)

With regard to a hosted site - anyone who wants to make one, I'm sure MonsieurEvil would be more than happy to host a models/skins/sprites site at The Readyroom. Someone just needs to take the initiative to make and maintain such a site.

A "I'm looking for alien models and can't find them!" post in General prompted me to go ahead with this idea... please post each of your releases in the stickied topic so people looking for models/etc can (more) easily find them. (:

Just my opinion, but as part of the "Release topic rules" I think you should have people doing re-releases or updates actually post the updates or releases in thier original post instead of editing it just to say "updated, look further down". I mean, they are editiing it alreay, why not have them edit in the new links of the updates, and this way they will be grouped how they should be (originals and thier updates) for easy findage. Thats just my opinion on it

*edit* And I assume this applies for other works (sound packs, sprites, etc)? Just throwing it out there

Actually, I agree with that. My original thought was that if you re-release something, just editing your post isn't going to let people know. But if you're making a new *topic*, that'll clue people in anyway. So yeah, good call. (:

-edit- By the way -- if you released something before I started that thread, please post it in there! It's a repository for ALL released models, not just new ones. (:
