<div class="IPBDescription">13 shots and layout</div> I began making ns_thea as a map to quickly test my NS texture wad on (which is available for download somewhere on the mapping forum). However, as time went on, and I kept adding bits, and with positive feedback from quite a few people (thanks for the encouragement guys and gals). So here I give you a veritable plethora of screenshots and a couple of layouts.

It is nearing a state where it can be tested, however there is still quite a lot of work to be done, and lighting and architecture in some screenshots (especially shots 4, 5 and 9) are not finished.

What I would like <b>especially</b> is your opinion of the layout. It is currently a very basic and uncomplicated map. The routes are pretty straight, and while all hives are between 25-35 seconds marine run away from the Marine Spawn, I would still like some opinions. I am aiming this map at a smaller number of players (5v5-8v8 would be ideal I guess, this has yet to be tested). <b>Resource node placement and vent suggestions would be lovely.</b>

The map layout is as such:

(edit: I forgot to mention, the red pathways are vents)

    My personal favourite, The Cavern.

    This corridoor was a copy and paste from an old map, but it doesnt look too bad. There are some unaligned textures which have been fixed, but I cant stand waiting for another compile to finish. Damn you hlrad, damn you. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Its the same as the last one. From a different angle.

    Stabilisation Approach. The pipes, the pipes. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Again, Stabilisation Approach. Complete with sloshy water and little whoosy bits in the wall.
    <img src='http://www.box7.co.uk/thea/thea7.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

    Power Stabilisation Hive. Power transformers are embedded into the wall (you cant see), but the coolant system has broken, leading to a infesation of the area by the Kharaa.

    Primary Generator. This area is rather far from incomplete. The Generators in the next build should have visible electricity, and all that jazz, and the ceiling lights will be changed so they give lighting to all of the walkways. Its a bit dark at the moment.
    <img src='http://www.box7.co.uk/thea/thea9.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

    Frontier Junction. Just outside the Marine Spawn. Thanks to Roadmaster for the models of the chairs.

    Ore Processing. I think this area may be redone before the map is released.

    An old shot of the Marine Spawn. In case you are wondering, there is now an opening and a vent in the far corner, and the command console sits just up the furthest set of stairs.
    <img src='http://www.box7.co.uk/thea/6.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

    An old shot of the readyroom.
    <img src='http://www.box7.co.uk/thea/readyroom.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

    Thats the lot. All feedback would be greaty appreciated.

    I love your MS and the little Thea logo. RR looks nice, did you change that sky?

    Anyhow, can't wait to play it.

    This looks like a hellova map. I caught myself mouth agape looking through your screen shots. Only thing I can think, and this just may be the perspective of where the shot was taken is:

    thea3.jpg.......The Cavern....looks abnormaly large vs the rest of the shots. Perhaps a fall of water from the mountian above or something?.

    Other than that.. Absoultly astounding. ETA on release? <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->

    This shot was taken noclipped into the floor, so do not worry about dimensions. I do have a habit of making things bigger than they should be heightwise, but this is not one of those areas. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    ETA on release? Hmm, a month maybe? I will probably see what is happening with 1.1, I have not submitted, so I wouldnt like to get caught up in that and have my map go unplayed.

    Indeed. From what I see so far the map looks promising. Good call on waiting. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    WOW fam, that looks excellent, and since you're such a great texture artist (great artist in general) your custom textures are awesome! i especially like the cust. rock texture! ant the readyroom really looks cool, cuz it looks like its going into the complex. your map looks like it has a lot of realism too, like the water flowing in the bottom of that corridor, and the rr going into the complex.

    Again, Fam, you know I love the map.
    New areas it seems, I really cannot wait to check out the Primary Generator hive ingame.
    Just a personal comment from someone who's run around ingame - the map really needs to be played to get the full feel. Walking through the sloshy water of Stabilisation approach is such an incredibly immersing experience (Pardon the pun, really) and there is a very lovely transition throughout the map from the clean stylings of the marine spawn and Frontier Junction area into the alien infested hives. Visually, the completed parts of the map are just beautiful.

    My only complaint may be with the layout.. your placement of nodes and hives seems fine.. but it seems a bit small (even though I know this was the intended effect.) There may be a possibility that gameplay on Thea will become rather stagnant, as there are few alternate routes, and it seems from the layout picture that the map is mostly just a big, interconnected "room" in the middle with hallways leading off to the hives and marine spawn.

    We'll definitely find out any problems during playtesting though, and as I've said before the layout is the only fault I can find in an otherwise beautiful map.

    Anyways, looks awesome, the pics nicely speak for themselves. And props to that seksay skybox.

    The skybox is hopefully being redone entirely by the ever-sexifull Chalupamonk. However, this one fits nicely, so its going to be hard choosing.

    I'm with Boz on this, it seems that if the marines want to take any kind of alternate route they have to pass through the center of the map, maybe space out the center area a little and add an extra corridor... And a horizonal corridor too... just for randomness... Textuing and architecture. Pretty... although that corridor you imported from another map looks a little... basic.

    Res placement fafours marines if they get 4 res (overall) automatically when they have one hive.
    Res placement im mapcenter close to MS fafours marines.
    The 2 res closest to mapcenter; delete one and make the other one more central...

    Well, as I see it every resnode has it's own room, so I don't really agree with Ollj's conclusion.
    But that's just me...

    This map looks really great for small servers.
    And the hives really look good and somewhat easier to defend against jetpacks than powersilo or computer core.
    However, as a fan of vents, I would like to see some more connections. Maybe a ventsystem leading from the easternmost hive to the corridor between shots 6 and 11 continuing towards Primary Generator (shot 9) and maybe branching off to Power Stabilisation Hive?

    Like I said, I am a fan of vents and this is just my 2 cents.
  • FamFam Diaper-Wearing Dog On A Ball Join Date: 2002-02-17 Member: 222Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
    I'm rather a fan of vents myself, thanks for your feedback Wheezer, im certainly going to add in some of your vent routes after I remake that corridoor you mention.

    Thanks everyone else for the feedback, keep it coming, and you can be relatively harsh if needs be, I can take it. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    try to make a nancy-style vent system. I never liked vent systems like, say, nothing's... party because it had few vents in the first place, but they were not connected. same thing with bast, to some extent.

    nancy's vents utterly blow me away. I truly feel like a badass alien when I can go anywhere... ANYWHERE through the ventilation system, which I practically freakin' own (as in posess, not pwn).

    Anyway, the center of the big ring could either use some ventage going across, or maybe a pretty room. As in, a cool thing there. Well, that's all for now, I'm going to bed. bye!

    Oh: the pipes in that hive... allow skulks to run around inside them <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Oh My God...

    Words can't describe this map. Seriously. I can't get over those screenshots.

    I sat there for 15 minutes looking at the overlay map trying to figure out any imbalances but i couldn't really see any. I did notice no weld points (not a fan?). Anywho, it looks brilliant and I'd give my left leg to play on it <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    OMG Fam^!! Nice to see your map pics! I do have to say that your arquitecture is really good. I cant find any mayor problems in the design. Maybe some more vents conecting hives to make it easier for aliens to reconquer one when marines do have it. I really like the idea you got here, with lots of nodes in the central part (every room seems to have one) that'll make marines concentrate in both getting 1 or 2 hives and still, trying to have control on some of the central nodes.

    i hope to PT it soon in NANO <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->, continue with the good work!

    It is certainly more impressive if its just been made out of odds and ends to test your tex....

    Yes yes, very nice!

    Only thing I saw was the possible spelling error in "stabilisation". A quick check at <a href='http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=stabilization' target='_blank'>dictionary.com</a> tells me that is a synonym for "stabilization" (which I thought to be correct), although I can't remember ever seeing "stabilisation" before. Is this the proper usage in merrie olde England?
