A lot of people have invested a great deal of time, money, and effort to do well in college/university. Some people are so obsessed with high grades that they lose sight of the real world, and focus too much on grades, tests, classes, and papers. There's nothing wrong with wanting to succeed and do well, but some people simply take it way too far.
I've personally seen two people, who were both close to me at the time, become so obsessed with maintaining their straight-A averages that they'd nearly starve themselves to death because they wouldn't take time to eat. One even had to be hospitalized because of it. I spent a great deal of time with her while she was recovering (<i>short term, thankfully</i>), and her only concern was missing the exam.
Yes, <b>one exam</b>!! She nearly <i>died</i>, and she was worried about missing an exam!! I sat and talked with her for what seemd like six hours straight, trying to help her see reason. Once she finally realized what nearly happened, she was obviously very shaken up. She later went and did the exam (it was deferred for her, obviously), and she got her A.
It was a very scary thing to see someone close so wrapped up with an obsession to nearly die. During that time, she was very stressed out, slept very little, ate almost nothing, and it nearly killed her. After her incident, she still studied hard and graduated at the top of her class, but she never over-studied since then. She'd always make time to enjoy life rather than spend all her time with her nose in a book, and she's been much happier ever since.
I'm obviously very glad she got through it without any permanent damage, as she's now working a very high-profile job, making exceptional money, and has clearly earned what she's studied so hard for.
Anyways, the point of my rambling is that some people commit suicide because they simply can't see past the grades, tests, and reports. Life is not numbers on a transcript, but some who strive to be the best simply don't understand this.

Sad, but true.
Multivariable calc is teh r0x0r. (Vector fields, flux, volume under a z=f(x,y) function.) Everything I took after that made me cry.
