Trend I'm Seein In Remodeling ...

<div class="IPBDescription">(some precautions have to be taken)</div> Hi, I don't want to be a show stoper but ...

I was just checking a few models from folks who are remodeling the NS models (marines, aliens, ...) and I'm seeing a trend that emerges and that kinda makes me worried.

People are taking ideas from the Alien movies, AVP, AVP2, ... That's cool in all but what about when the model looks alot like one from another game. That worries me in thinking that this might go againts the all might Intellectual property law.

Now some of you might start saying "Yea but NS already took ideas from starcraft for the alien towers". Maybe but maybe the way they designed them was close enough not to cause any problems with that law.

Most model are different in design then the original copy (coming from elsewhere) and still retain the look of it but some others seam to be almost alike.

I don't recall seing any comments in the remodeling threads about warning that the models starting to look alot like one from another game or even cautioning the creator into checking up that issue.

Now I don't want to stop any of them because I personnaly think most of those remodeled projects are COOL !!! I don't want to stop anyone. I just want that issue to be looked on those remodel that look alot like models from other games, before it may be too late. There is nothing worst that having a project almost fully done and having to drop everything because of that.

How about it ?

Well, all my models of space marines and the like turn out looking like potatoes with match sticks poking out , so I should be ok...

Unless Fox release Aliens vs Predator Vs Potatoes, I'm in the clear..:E

If Flayra were using Alien models, there would be an issue. However, as these are fan-created models, I don't think there's a real issue. Fox might take issue, I suppose, but it's not a huge danger.

You don't understand how IP works. In this circumstance, the closest thing we're infringing upon is copyright laws. Since these models are made from scratch, there is no possibility of infringing on any copyrights. If Flayra wanted to call this mod AvP HL mod, then yeah, he'd be infringing upon a trademark. Trademark only because of the name.

I thought making custom models in general was illegal but just not enforced.

Last time someone brought up copyright infringements it led to the last few pages of <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=19&t=10054&hl=colonial&st=0' target='_blank'>this thread</a> and this rather lovely little quote:

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->im a little **obscenity**? how about **obscenity** you

do it your own god damn self, i do not want to **obscenity** risk ending up in court over some stupid **obscenity** for **obscenity** arrogant **obscenity** on a **obscenity** mod message board, so **obscenity** you **obscenity** do it yourself<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Let's not have that happen again, eh chaps?

Most of the models that come from another game are conversions.
As long as the author does not take credit for the work, there is no problem.
As for "ideas" coming from other games.. nothing wrong with that.
A good idea is a good idea.
Like the great man said: "If it ain't broken, don't fix it!"

Since the NS official models are all 100% custom made and not from any game, no one can touch them. Now, if NS were to go on as an official game, everything has to be checked thoroughly to prevent any copyright problems.

Replacement models from other games don't really anything. If you converted them yourself and use them for your personnal use, you're fine. But the moment you start distributing it, then there are problems.

The most possible thing to happen if the company doesn't want it, they will ask the modeller(Converter) and/or hosts of the files to stop making them and/or hosting them(Them being the files of course). NS would be in no danger at all.

Don't bring up IP infringement until it is an actual problem. If a large company takes enough time to care what individuals are doing i'm sure the people they contact will quit distributing the stuff.

Just keep in mind that if we get the slightest email from someone about their model that you messed with showing up on our forums, we'll be dropping all your related posts like a lava rock. Forewarned everyone.

copy right infringement - as defined by me (and my english teacher) - To copy, or steal another person's work, (here's the important part) AND CLAIM IT AS YOUR OWN.

i think we've got our behinds covered on that part, and with the NUMEROUS threads speaking out against plagerism, and well, in my humble opinion, it's over-worked too much
