My suggestion would be..... reference pics!
Find some pics of a gun you'd like to model, and stick them into the background view of the modeler (I'm pretty sure MS lets you do this). Then you'll be able to make your model conform to more realistic dimensions, since you'll have a picture right there to base it on. Also, you need to add a lot more polys to get a more realistic model.
I'd suggest checking out some of the tutorial links in the stickied thread "Modeling 101" -- they helped me a ton when I was starting up.

on topic...well its alot better than my first attempt at a model turned out...i should really try again...that sphere was tricky =P i almost made it round...and that was using the tool <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
