Forum Bitching
<div class="IPBDescription">Not so much here, but it happens!</div> Its weird how lately a lot of forums (i'm not sure about this one because i haven't been here long) have bitching matches, and thats all ppl post about, i mean on DoD forums every1 is getting banned for no reason, and on forums i go on its exactly the same, y is this
I mean the forum i run
<a href='http://www.halflifeforum.com' target='_blank'>http://www.halflifeforum.com</a>
None of that happens, Since the forum is a neutral area for all mods, ppl don't start moaning about how crap a mod is or somert, its just half life chat, surely thats what a forum is for. What are your thoughts

Usually, it starts with elitism between the older ranks and the new players (or something else to divide people). The tricky part here is it can actually not even seem like elitism to the older ranks. They may genuinely be helpful and friendly people, yet if you aren't very careful and constantly on the look out for it, elitism can build up very, very fast. This is what has happened with the mod communities I've been with (I won't name names, but those who know me know exactly which ones I'm talking about). Again I say, its easy for this one to creep up. It was even starting to happen here a bit, but thankfully I think that has receeded.
After elitism gets set in, things go downhill fast. Very fast. I'm talking maybe within a few months a place will go from a cheery newcomer-welcoming place to a hellhouse. Whether people get alienated, or there are "wars" amongst groups, or something else, whatever happens things go downhill.
Why has NS not gone this route yet? It could be one or more of several things.
- NS is still the newest big HL mod, perhaps there just hasn't been enough time for things to go downhill yet.
- The NS community standards are by far higher and stricter than other communities. The biggest example of this is the strict language/content guidelines set up by the NS team for the forums and IRC, as well as the enforcement of them. I applaud the NS team for taking the stand they did on this issue.
- Due to the complex nature of the mod, a different (more mature perhaps) crowd is drawn to it, thus making this less of a problem? Note: its less, people are still stupid people, regardless of age...
So which of these are correct? Will NS eventually fall to the level that other communities are at? I sure hope not, and as an op in #ns I'm going to try my damnedest to keep that from happening.
and *knocks on wood* *repeats because redundancy is your friend* the NS forums go downhill (WHICH THEY WON'T!) I will still avidly play NS, becuase it's a very cool game
All the mods can do is do our best to difuse arguements.
Everyone should learn to take 10 deep breaths when we read something that gets up our noses... Then think about posting... then think some more... then not bother <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Wishful thinking I guess... <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
For now we'll just keep on *enforcing* peace thru Superior Firepower instead <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Now all I want is for Monse to step outta line so I can give him a feel of my boot <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Interesting post!
I certanly thing you're right on one perticular point, that NS, unlike other mods involves actually a bit of maturity to play the game. I mean if you don't have the skill to think about what you're doing in this game, then there is no point in playing
Indeed. If I posted everything I wanted to here, well I certainly wouldn't be contributing to anything.
Here's a little tip that I'll share. Its what I do when somebody posts something insanely stupid or begs for flaming or etc.
Click reply, type out the post as much as you want, type everything you need to to get it out of your system. Then click the big X in the corner rather than reply. :P
I know, it sounds stupid, but try it, and you'll see that it actually does help vent some frustration.

Hmm...I thought I was the only one who did that. Glad to see I'm not alone.
