don't be ashamed
I do. I've been playing since the end of last year, and play Std. Level songs. I can't beat all of them. My current arch-nemesis is "So Deep" which I beat about 1/5 of the time.
Now, who else will admit to this indulgence?
[sidenote] I have played a FIRST MIX, and beaten it, horribly. They were ridiculously easy. And I think it had a total of 18 songs. [/sidenote]

I'm better at the older ones for two reasons: first, they're undoubtedly easier; second, they aren't as popular, so I get more practice on them than the newer machines (which are constantly taken by "regulars," most of which I recognize despite never seeing them more than once every 2-3 months, and one of which owns a shirt from ddrfreak.com)
On older machines like USA or 3rd mix, I usually beat 4-6 "foot" difficulty just fine. I will say that 6th and 7th mix are a heck of a lot more fun though, even when I lose. There's more songs, they're better, the framerate on the screen seems almost double (it makes bigger difference than I expected).
When I go I usually do my warmup of Afronova easy on the USA machine, in which I'm looking at the screen about a grand total of 5 seconds for the song, glancing at it to see where my next spin should be (that's my best song for spinning, it's an easy one). After that I go to any machine that's open, and when I get a chance or I'm about to leave I finish off with Max 300 or Unlimited on the newer machines. On average I'll spend about 4 hours straight, with the only stops being for water, stretching, or waiting in line (ARRRGH annoying! I wanna get my groove on!)
I've still yet to conquer Maxx Unlimited though. Much too fast...I don't play it much. When I feel like showing off and impressing all the random azn chicks =P I play Afronova on maniac and Double without looking at the screen. Always a crowd pleaser.
I've been playing maybe 3 weeks. I'm already doing the easier songs on maniac and most of the harder ones on trick.
I wouldn't say i'm good at all though, they're are people i've seen in my local arcade that have AA'd MaxX and So Deep, but i can pass relatively any cata with a C-B rating in the arcade, minus a few like so deep or cartoon heroes. :D My greatest accomplishment recently was beating Max300 with B in the arcade, it was a total fluke though, and yes, the bar is your friend on 10 footers, heh, or at least, it was mine when i beat Max300. :D
DDR is awesome simply put, if you haven't had the chance to play it, go out and do it, it's a great passtime, and it's incredibly fun to play and watch, especially good players. I totally need to work on stanima, sheesh.

Don't bother with those playstations You can buy a PS to PC converter at http://www.levelsix.com and use your PS dance pads on the PC. With StepMania, you can play any song - I have te complete 2nd through 8th mixes, the club and solo mixes, and a TON of user created songs. Very fun, and a great way to practice anything you could ever want.
Some good rips of the offical. Probably best place to fill your DWI/Stepmania folders.

I have all my songs available, all zipped up by mix
Also, ebay is your friend - I ordered two awesome ignition deluxes for about $55, shipping included. They're increadible, especially after first playing on my sister's crappy mad catz pads (eww).
Started playing a year ago so I'm not great, can beat alot of songs on maniac/heavy mode though 'p
I play DDR, haven't lately though ...
Stay away too long and it gets progressively harder ... so i need to start playing again.
And So Deep is an awesome song, but I suck at it.

For the case you're talking about, you can't get angry at them for having a lot of experience, or being Asian. You can and should get angry at them if they decide to both:
1. Disrespect everyone's right to play a relatively equal amount of time
2. Ignore or otherwise show disrespect to you if you politely ask for playing time and/or advice (see paragraphs 3-4).
If this is the case, I suggest you bring it up to the manager. If at all possible, find a way to very indirectly hint at the fact that if there's such a high demand for DDR machines and people are being turned away from the establishment due to this "hogging," either a new machine should be bought or rules enforced for fairness. Succeeding to subtly establish a solid mental link between profits and following your orders will result in the manager doing whatever you want.
As I mentioned in my earlier post in this thread, the arcade near me that has DDR machines is too expensive ($0.75/game) to play when there's no unlimited play deal; when I do go there when that deal is on, there's usually a group of 6-10 friends who decide to practically own one of the machines for as long as they're there. I feel for you.
Curiously enough, I find that the "regulars" who draw crowds with their skills are usually much less territorial. They want to see others practice enough to get to their level, and thus many of them are happy to help you out, offer advice or moves, play a song or few alongside you, etc. if you ask respectfully.
Gameworks is a rip off though. I go to Arcade Infinity for some real play...a lot of really good people play there and its only 50 cents for 4 songs. And they have 2 machines with nobody constantly playing on them with a free card.
hehe, I don't touch DDR for a few reasons:
1) I am a heavy bastd and thus can't jump quick enugh (I weigh 200+ pounds, and it just don't work)
2) SCREW ALL OF YOU 75 CENTS IS NOT ALOT!!!!!!
lol, I am from NYC so yah, the going rate is $1 per play, it just aint worth it.
3) I know somany of yalls are gona reach out and smack me for this, I play para-para. ;D
I have much better speed and cordination with my arms then I do with my legs so I tend to stick to that

hehe, I weigh 220 pounds and have no problem playing 9 foot songs =P Gameworks is a huge ripoff here, 2 bucks a play. and PARA PARA ROCKS!
I ended up playing SSR a ton at my local arcade tonight (3rd mix korean1, obviously :P), i love flat, even though most people hate it. :D BB$KoG3+PR+DR = winx0r.
and as for other 200+ people being able to do it:
Yah I know, I see em every so often, I just can't move my feet like that, not sure why (I have no problems with foot movement for martial arts, I just can't play DDR ;D)
hehe, what I want to see is a version of step mainia for Para Para.
The only problem would be finding that hells a old Sega Genesis accesory that had a motion thing just like para para (yah imagine ussing that to play concole games, it was an actualy worse idea then the supper glove ;D)
We played Pump It Up at Jillian's in Denver a while ago and it was something like $2.50 a play... now THAT is steep.
Speaking of fat people playing DDR... I don't have a problem with it, but somewhere you've gotta draw the line on "too fat to play". I was in FL for vacation last week and happened across a 3rd mix. After playing a few times, a kid came up to play, and he was.... rather large. Actually I'd put his weight at around 300-350 pounds, and he was in his teens still . He ended up breaking one of the pads... irked me a little when he got off and said "this side's screwed up"... I just thought "yeah, because of you, you stupid cow". Oh well.
Cy, you're doing 10's?? When did you get good? (:
Sadly, the only DDR I can get to is my USA mix for PSX. ): A friend of mine has a plugmod & 2-5, but his PSX is broken, so I'm trying to talk him into letting me borrow them.
On USA, I can beat every song except Afronova and Get Up & Move on Maniac. GU&M, IMO, is harder than Dynamite Rave... it makes you jump all over the freakin place.
Most of my other-mix experiences are sight-reading, but I can on-site up to about 8 feet or so usually. My former favorite song is Papaya - Hero (Happy Grandale Remix) on Maniac. It was recently replaced by "Holic" off DDR MAX (or is it MAX2? The PS2 game), which is just ridiculously fun.
I can get like a D-C on ordinary world on easy with DDR max.
I guess i suck because the matt is kinda small and im pretty big like 6'5" and my left foot has a loose bone in it.
