Who Plays Ddr

<div class="IPBDescription">don't be ashamed</div> I do. I've been playing since the end of last year, and play Std. Level songs. I can't beat all of them. My current arch-nemesis is "So Deep" which I beat about 1/5 of the time.

Now, who else will admit to this indulgence?

[sidenote] I have played a FIRST MIX, and beaten it, horribly. They were ridiculously easy. And I think it had a total of 18 songs. [/sidenote]

I play when I can; that is, when the one arcade in a reasonable distance of me that has DDR has their "ten buck tuesday" deal and I'm off school (unlimited arcade for $10). A whole lot of fun, but only when I don't have to wait in line an insane amount of time; even though they've got a number of machines there (USA mix, 3rd mix, 6th mix, 7th mix) the crowd gets too huge most of the time.

I'm better at the older ones for two reasons: first, they're undoubtedly easier; second, they aren't as popular, so I get more practice on them than the newer machines (which are constantly taken by "regulars," most of which I recognize despite never seeing them more than once every 2-3 months, and one of which owns a shirt from ddrfreak.com)

On older machines like USA or 3rd mix, I usually beat 4-6 "foot" difficulty just fine. I will say that 6th and 7th mix are a heck of a lot more fun though, even when I lose. There's more songs, they're better, the framerate on the screen seems almost double (it makes bigger difference than I expected).

When I go I usually do my warmup of Afronova easy on the USA machine, in which I'm looking at the screen about a grand total of 5 seconds for the song, glancing at it to see where my next spin should be (that's my best song for spinning, it's an easy one). After that I go to any machine that's open, and when I get a chance or I'm about to leave I finish off with Max 300 or Unlimited on the newer machines. On average I'll spend about 4 hours straight, with the only stops being for water, stretching, or waiting in line (ARRRGH annoying! I wanna get my groove on!)

Ah, I love DDR. I usually play at this place nearby called Arcade Infinity, they have all these imported games so they always get the newest mixes before anyone else. Much cheaper than anywhere else too, DDR is like 50 cents for 4 songs there. Haven't been able to play in a while though. I used to play only 9 foot songs but recently I play fun songs even if they are only 7 or 8 feet. Usually start with Tsugaru or WWW.Blonde girl for fun and as like a warm up. Favorite songs to play are So Deep and Burning Heat. And of course te great LUPIN THE 3rd 78!! Greatest song ever.

I've still yet to conquer Maxx Unlimited though. Much too fast...I don't play it much. When I feel like showing off and impressing all the random azn chicks =P I play Afronova on maniac and Double without looking at the screen. Always a crowd pleaser.

I play every day until my legs are sore and my ankles start protesting and I just can't bring myself to do it once more =P

I've been playing maybe 3 weeks. I'm already doing the easier songs on maniac and most of the harder ones on trick.

I play DDR all the time, it's probably my favorite passtime besides gaming and sleeping. I've been playing since last summer off and on, as my friend was the only one with a pad and konamix/usa that i could play at, and none of the area's nearby had arcades until recently. My area finally got a few mixes, a 3rd Korean1, 2 7th mixes, and an EX a few miles away. (w00t!) I recently bought a pad/max/konamix for ps2, as the only time i ever get the chance to go the arcades is on weekends. :D My stanima totally sucks though, playing and B'ing EE 3 times in a row = death, for me.

I wouldn't say i'm good at all though, they're are people i've seen in my local arcade that have AA'd MaxX and So Deep, but i can pass relatively any cata with a C-B rating in the arcade, minus a few like so deep or cartoon heroes. :D My greatest accomplishment recently was beating Max300 with B in the arcade, it was a total fluke though, and yes, the bar is your friend on 10 footers, heh, or at least, it was mine when i beat Max300. :D

DDR is awesome simply put, if you haven't had the chance to play it, go out and do it, it's a great passtime, and it's incredibly fun to play and watch, especially good players. I totally need to work on stanima, sheesh.

    By the way:

    <a href='http://www.stepmania.com' target='_blank'>http://www.stepmania.com</a>

Don't bother with those playstations <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> You can buy a PS to PC converter at <a href='http://www.levelsix.com' target='_blank'>http://www.levelsix.com</a> and use your PS dance pads on the PC. With StepMania, you can play any song - I have te complete 2nd through 8th mixes, the club and solo mixes, and a TON of user created songs. Very fun, and a great way to practice anything you could ever want.

DWI (<a href='http://dwi.ddrei.com' target='_blank'>Dance With Intensity</a>) is also another great DDR sim like stepmania. I strongly suggest downloading stepmania or DWI and a variety of songs and buying the PS/PC USB link to play. I plan on ordering one soon, my friend has had one for quite some time, i'm just kind of used to my living room with a 55" TV compared to a 17" monitor. :D If anyone of you are interested in DWI, contact me via pm/irc, and i'll give you a nice FTP with hundreds of songs for it. :D

So deep is gallop-licious, and i totally love that. I just can't read so deep/orion/bag/etc, very well, so i tend to suck at them. :D I totally love burning heat/tsugaru/kakumei though, really fun songs. DDR = win.

I draw a line between speeding and just having fun... right now I just enjoy doing things like B4U, Paranoia 180, Sexy Planet, Drop the Bomb, End of the Century, Era, Healing Vision Angelic and such on trick... I've been working on maniac, but my ankles are in so much pain right now that I wear myself out quickly. =\ I keep saying: "I just won't play for a day or two and let them heal!" But... I can't stay away =P

THEY WONT EVEN LET US USE THE FREE CREDITS cheap **** ****. I got to play like twice over 3 hours because they hogged the machine like hell.

For the case you're talking about, you can't get angry at them for having a lot of experience, or being Asian. You <i>can</i> and should get angry at them if they decide to both:
    1. Disrespect everyone's right to play a relatively equal amount of time
    2. Ignore or otherwise show disrespect to you if you politely ask for playing time and/or advice (see paragraphs 3-4).

If this is the case, I suggest you bring it up to the manager. If at all possible, find a way to <i>very indirectly</i> hint at the fact that if there's such a high demand for DDR machines and people are being turned away from the establishment due to this "hogging," either a new machine should be bought or rules enforced for fairness. Succeeding to subtly establish a solid mental link between profits and following your orders will result in the manager doing whatever you want.

As I mentioned in my earlier post in this thread, the arcade near me that has DDR machines is too expensive ($0.75/game) to play when there's no unlimited play deal; when I <i>do</i> go there when that deal is on, there's usually a group of 6-10 friends who decide to practically own one of the machines for as long as they're there. I feel for you.

Curiously enough, I find that the "regulars" who draw crowds with their skills are usually much less territorial. They want to see others practice enough to get to their level, and thus many of them are happy to help you out, offer advice or moves, play a song or few alongside you, etc. if you ask respectfully.
  • VashVash Join Date: 2002-11-12 Member: 8333Members
I'm not angry for either of those reasons. They really were not good at all, I played against them a few times and they failed every song about 1/5 the way through. But still, they should enforce this because EVERY TIME I go to this mall they are there every single day with a free card. They stay there all day and play (or should I say FAIL) the same song 3 times over and over. And the machine is right next to the counter thing where the worker dude sells card deals and stuff, they don't give a damn.

Gameworks is a rip off though. I go to Arcade Infinity for some real play...a lot of really good people play there and its only 50 cents for 4 songs. And they have 2 machines with nobody constantly playing on them with a free card.

$0.75/3 songs is average price i'd say, or at least from my experience with DDR arcades. My local area has a 7th mix for $1/3 songs, a 7th mix for $0.50/3 songs, a 3rd mix korean1 for $0.75/3 songs, and an 8th mix for $1/4 songs. I really don't mind spending a dollar for 3-4 songs, it seems fair, and it's really not all that expensive unless you plan on playing for a few hours. :D

I ended up playing SSR a ton at my local arcade tonight (3rd mix korean1, obviously :P), i love flat, even though most people hate it. :D BB$KoG3+PR+DR = winx0r.

wow, $2 for a play, that just aint right

and as for other 200+ people being able to do it:
Yah I know, I see em every so often, I just can't move my feet like that, not sure why (I have no problems with foot movement for martial arts, I just can't play DDR ;D)

hehe, what I want to see is a version of step mainia for Para Para.

The only problem would be finding that hells a old Sega Genesis accesory that had a motion thing just like para para (yah imagine ussing that to play concole games, it was an actualy worse idea then the supper glove ;D)

Para Para was ported to console...it's for PS2. It comes with this little thing that goes on the floor and somehow reads your hand movements.

We played Pump It Up at Jillian's in Denver a while ago and it was something like $2.50 a play... now THAT is steep.

Speaking of fat people playing DDR... I don't have a problem with it, but somewhere you've gotta draw the line on "too fat to play". I was in FL for vacation last week and happened across a 3rd mix. After playing a few times, a kid came up to play, and he was.... rather large. Actually I'd put his weight at around 300-350 pounds, and he was in his teens still <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->. He ended up breaking one of the pads... irked me a little when he got off and said "this side's screwed up"... I just thought "yeah, because of you, you stupid cow". Oh well.

Cy, you're doing 10's?? When did you get good? (:

Sadly, the only DDR I can get to is my USA mix for PSX. ): A friend of mine has a plugmod & 2-5, but his PSX is broken, so I'm trying to talk him into letting me borrow them.

On USA, I can beat every song except Afronova and Get Up & Move on Maniac. GU&M, IMO, is harder than Dynamite Rave... it makes you jump all over the freakin place.

Most of my other-mix experiences are sight-reading, but I can on-site up to about 8 feet or so usually. My former favorite song is Papaya - Hero (Happy Grandale Remix) on Maniac. It was recently replaced by "Holic" off DDR MAX (or is it MAX2? The PS2 game), which is just ridiculously fun.
