Map Making Questions

I recently started thinking about making a NS map, maybe make it a hobby but i cant seem to find where to start, i went through this forum looking hard for advice and i downloaded Quark to help me trouble is i dont know how to use it or the actual step by step process, ive designed maps before for blizzard games and some others but they all had a map maker with them if someone can post a good place to find step by step instructions on how to go about making a good map or just post a step by step process id appricate it thanks <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    yeah, use Hammer, and the link to a tutourial is in a signiture, just make the rooms smaller then in the actuall tutourial.

    If you're brand new to mapping, I'd suggest heading over to www.valve-erc.com for their tutorials. Also, keep in mind that mapping for NS is *very* difficult; it would be a good idea to "test the waters" with a simple DM map before you try something as complex as an NS map.

    Hammer is a program that is simpler to use then Quark Army Knife. Also, I was afraid of making NS maps for a while, trust me it's not for your average noob, perhaps try an easier mod to map for, we don't want people getting mad that they can't map for mods like NS and quit mapping, why don't you sharpen your skills first by making simpler maps for simper mod, now I'm going to get my self another half-sour pickle.

    does hammer work with NS? the whole textures and buildings or do i have to pacth somehow

    Yes it does, no patch, please see the tutourial in my sig "starting mapping for ns" or something to that extent for the instructions on how to set it up, and how to make your first map, but the set up guide is a must for all.

    I checked your site after i posted sorry :\ i downloaded ZHLT though an i plan to mess with lesser mods like u suggested to get the feeling for the creator before i start making an NS map, i realize its hard work but i plan to do my homework and maybe come up with a good idea, been playing NS for about 4 months now so i know the flow of the game and where stuff goes, once again thanks hammer for yer help and if u have AIM keep an eye out for me so we dont have to keep checking this post every 5 mins

    5 steps to BASIC HL mapping learning, best learned on CS map or HL DM map:

    1. how to set up for editing & compiling & texturing, and where to get help/tutorials.
    2. basic editing mechanics, "how do i make a room, door, hall, next room, window, ladder", how to make textures & sprites.
    3. compiling errors and how to fix.
    4. r_speeds, HINTS, and Lagg fighting and pre-planning for them.
    5. complex entity sequences like beams, tracktrains, elevators, change targets, renders, multisource AND gates.

    now you are really ready for NS, not before:
    1. tighter entity limits
    2. tighter texture limits
    3. more r_speeds and lagg fighting and pre-planning
    4. preplan or deal with NS bugs that show up.

    seems to me you are on beginner step #1, and want to be on advanced NS #3......
