How?...
As you may have read in my other topic, ive had a problem with fps. Ive tried everything...pulling out my v card, reinstalling all its driver, set all settings in openGL blah blah blah etc... etc... It was running tip top of the crop about a week ago, but something ive done has messed up my fps drastically in HL and mods. Ive tried re-installing HL and all the mods, didnt work so im guessing ive put/changed something somewhere. Ive tried system restore before and that didnt work. Is there a way to set all things to default (wipe everything) without having the XP CD and how do i run safe mode when i boot up my pc? thanks for any help, and your time.
oh, and is there a way to get rid of direct x 9.0 (i want to put 8.1 back on)

Safe mode is enabled during the boot process.. just keep hitting F8 when you're booting, and you'll be presented with a boot selection menu.
DX9.0 cannot be removed, without a lot of work and in-depth knowledge of the OS. There may be removal scripts out there, but I don't know of any that work. Besideswhich, I've never really had a problem with them.

If it's an ATI-based card, try rolling back to the Catalyst 3.1 drivers. Uninstall the driver and Control Panel, install the older ones. Cat3.2 introduces a number of rendering bugs in select programs, while removing crash bugs in others... none of which I use.

Might be better to post your system specs (including driver revisions) than just asking why it's slowing down. Would likely garner more advice.

Er.. and I'm not sure about this one, but wouldn't this better belong in the 'off topic' forum?

I installed the cd it came with and then downloaded the latest detonator driver off nvidia.com (40 i think)

I was just about to put my old tnt2 pro back in, but...lol cant seem to find ANYWAY of inserting it

I had the same issues a while back with mx420.
A friend of mine who's really into computing once said "Oh my my, Geforce4 mx420 eh...Don't know exactly *what* happens, or *why* it happens, but something happens to that card, after which point previous performance is irreversible."

Needless to say (forgetting now what I did), I set out to prove him wrong, and did

Think it was a combination of switching around drivers back and forth.
It could've also been something silly. Try uninstalling all previous Gf4 drivers, moving the card to a new pci slot, rolling back drivers, anything you can think of. I forget what my exact solution was way back when, but I recall it being something particularly silly that didn't make sense.

I'd like to tell you to just swing it and get a new vid card, but to really take advantage of one you'd be better off going for a whole new computer, sorry

(and for gosh sakes man, XP with 128MB RAM? You're running on the razors edge of minimum required specs for XP with that rig...)

Make sure you go to the archived driver section of Nvidia and start moving backwards slowly in versions. Only change 1 thing at a time or you're never going to know what it ws that fixed it. Can you provide better details on before and after? What FPS rates were you getting previously and what are they now? What Hz rate does your monitor refresh at. Try and remember what changes you made in adding software or updating drivers. The more you tell us, the faster you will be fixed.
