Ship in war
This is an American carrier, by why on earth is it called USS Kitty Hawk?

Is it a cat that can fly?

A hawk that always lands on its feet?

A hybrid?

I believe it's named after Kitty Hawk, North Carolina where the Wright brothers made their first flight...and that makes sense because it's an aircraft carrier (duh).

(^^ yeah, what he said, since it took me a bit longer to snag the picture. Bah. ^^ )

Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA was the site of the first successful manned flight by the Wright Brothers in 1903.

As I understand it, later this year a replica of the original plane will make a similar flight in honor of the 100th anniversary of manned flight.

(On another note, is this not something taught in international schools? I mean, sure, it is United States history, but at the same time I would think that something that has had such a dramatic impact on modern civilization might be of more interest for educators, regardless of national origin.)

And why is the city called "Kitty Hawk"?

Same reason we have towns named "Accident" and a few other names that wouldn't necessarily comply with board rules...

There's a town called "Got Milk?" in the U.S.

Why is there a city called hamburg? Or London? Or The Hague? Or Hong Kong. All are silly sounding if you think about it and make no real sense...

I believe you misunderstood my post.
You probably thought I was trying to insult your country by suggesting that "Kitty Hawk" is a silly name. This fear is perfectly understandable, given the recent upsurge of anti-American sentiments around the globe.

As for your question about the etymology of "Hamburg":
A really short history of Hamburg (in German).
Hamburg is a shortening of "Hammaburg."
    Burg (German) = castle
Hamma (Old High German) = bend, river bend

Just for the record, I'm all in favor of renaming Hamburg to "Libertysteakville."

im pretty sure he wasn't implying that you were insulting our country. all he was saying was what's in a name? why does the name matter and all names sound dumb and make no sense if you think about it anyways.
