I believe it's named after Kitty Hawk, North Carolina where the Wright brothers made their first flight...and that makes sense because it's an aircraft carrier (duh).
As I understand it, later this year a replica of the original plane will make a similar flight in honor of the 100th anniversary of manned flight.
(On another note, is this not something taught in international schools? I mean, sure, it is United States history, but at the same time I would think that something that has had such a dramatic impact on modern civilization might be of more interest for educators, regardless of national origin.)
Get ready for this one.... My city is called LaSalle, which is French for "The Bathroom".
I knew the first flight, and who did it, but I dont know the name. Heck, I dont know the name of the first submarine, or such, its just not needed knowledge

You probably thought I was trying to insult your country by suggesting that "Kitty Hawk" is a silly name. This fear is perfectly understandable, given the recent upsurge of anti-American sentiments around the globe.
As for your question about the etymology of "Hamburg": A really short history of Hamburg (in German). Hamburg is a shortening of "Hammaburg." Burg (German) = castle Hamma (Old High German) = bend, river bend
Just for the record, I'm all in favor of renaming Hamburg to "Libertysteakville."
im pretty sure he wasn't implying that you were insulting our country. all he was saying was what's in a name? why does the name matter and all names sound dumb and make no sense if you think about it anyways.
