Indeed
I'd like to blatantly shove this little link in the faces of all the TF2 doubters out there. Particularily statements like this:

Quote

It has been said 'on the record' that there's a new internally-built engine, and TF2 will use that. So rather than showing more old screenshots and stuff that's in development while we're building the new engine, we decided to put it back into the pot and cook it a bit more. We'll start showing it again once it gets to a certain point, and we're now getting very close to that point... and that's where I have to cut it [laughs].

Um... anyone still arguing?

[/rant]

Really though, it's quite a nice interview, I'd highly suggest giving it a read. Has nothing on Flayra's GH pwnage though...

can you blame people when their Official Site hasn't been updated since Jan 23, 2001?

    Hehehe...

Anyways, my point was that valve HAS said (like stated in the interview) that TF2 is no longer in the HL engine (which is really old news)... and is still in full development. A few months ago, if I'm not mistaken. Yet people still insist on believing that all they're up to is updating CS, and making deals with Gearbox. Heh.

I guess this probably won't change much either then, but... oh well. I'm just anticipating the day that the finally show some stuff. Some people are saying it's more "futuristic" than what we are expecting. That could just be a wild rumor for all we know... but I like the sounds of it.

Im not sure if I'd like a more 'futuristic' TF2. I don't want to shoot plasma or lazer beams at people. Good 'ol bullets will do fine, thank you.

I also want TF2 to be kind of like FA. More realism; based around realism, still has realism traits, however gameplay is more action.

I never doubted TF wasn't in development. I have always 'kept the fate' - even before they realesed HL. And the only reason I bought it ...

However I'm quite happy I did. Was well worth the $50 or so. Hell - probably worth 10 times that from all the use I've got out of it.

Oh yeah, I'm definitely with you on not wanting laser zappers and jingle bells. I was thinking something more along the lines of NS, actually.

Hmm... the more you think of it, the more NS actually does sound like a "futuristic" version of TF2. Heh. Whatever though, I'm sure it'll be fantastic however they do it.

I don't doubt that TF2 will be a good game, but they'd better hurry up or NS will literally blow them away. The most exiting TF2 innovation I know of by now is the option for one player to command the others, which won't be all that innovative very soon

Combine this with the ton of other stuff NS will throw in (Drastic differences between classes? Check. Some of the best maps ever made? Check. Great visuals? Check...) and Valve will be under real pressure.

So how will they respond? By attempting to absorb NS. Valve's motto: If you can't beat them, cash them up.

I think NS wouldn't be half-bad as a Valve-sponsored mod. Especially since Flayra said all of that stuff about "wouldn't it be great if we got paid to work all day on this?" yeah.

I don't think valve need to hurry about anything in relation to TF2. They could have the game almost complete and just adding finishing touches whilst they wait to pounce.

TF2 probably has the biggest "potential" of any game to come. It has pimpage right from it's name. You can be eagerly awaiting it without even having heard a word about it. That is powerful, all valve need to do is not screw up.

Obviously they can't wait forever (well, not without rewriting the engine anyway), but they can certainly wait for counter-strike to start to fade, or for a lull somewhere around DOOM3.

Of course what I expect is that they are working their butts off. Being multiplayer they don't have the drag of having to do endless amounts of single player maps that can't actually really be tested properly/finally until the other components are in place.

Talented mappers can produce multiplayer maps such that little tweaking would need to be done if a gun never included was suddenly put in.

Also you would only need about 10 maps in the product.

With any game I think it is ultimately gameplay, and most people who have any real appreciation for games probably understands that.

Some people question why I'm not dying over the DOOM3 engine or unreal2, well until I actually "feel" the game I won't know if I like it.

Afterall Q3 looks much better than half-life, but I hated all the games based off it just because it "felt fluffy".

Well, as long as TF2 has good ladders I don't care, when someone makes a good ladder in a game I'll buy the game just to feel a good ladder.

When animators can get it so that the running/walking anims don't ever have any slidign between foot and ground I'll be much happier (Yeah I understand it's somethign to do with the HL lag compensation stuff, but it is still stupid to see).

However I don't mind if they sacrifice 56k gaming.

WHAT?!? you cry. No, this isn't me putting down you lowly 56kers, I am one myself, but you have to admit (whether you can blame it on BT) that the 56k is so outdated, it would be like asking for TF2 to run on a 3DFX voodoo banshee.

It's just not gonna happen. Yeah you can see by numbers that half-life is way more popular than any other game, and a large part of the reason it is staying that way is because of it's superior netcode.

However, there are alternatives becoming available, even if it's only ISDN, it only costs about £100 a year or something, and you'd easily pay that for a new GFX card, yet you won't update some 10 year old tech.
So anyway, it would be a gamble there but I don't think it would be a disaster if the "minimum specs" stated a connection that could ping local servers in under 200ms.

Hmm.. good point there, richard. I agree. Considering that valve has turned to the broadband audience with STEAM... why would they do anything different with TF2? Makes sense to me. Even if I don't like the sounds of it...

And yes... no doubt they've been working their butts off on this for the past couple years. I'm just glad to see it's finally coming close to the final stages of development (apparently... hopefully).

I don't like the sound of having TF2 be more "futuristic" I think futuristic usually isn't as fun as real weapons and hardware. Except NS and maybe one or two others of course.
  • GreedoGreedo Bounty Hunter Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 37Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
Well, I'm pretty sure they designed it to be futuristic so that by the time it actually comes out, it will actually be quite realistic.

Hehe. Kidding. But seriously, I think I'm glad I never really paid any attention to TF2 early on.
  • GazaarGazaar Join Date: 2002-03-31 Member: 366Banned
lol. Good one Greedo. I have gotten to the point where I am giving up on TF2. I think when it's released I might be mildly dissapointed, it seems to me to be firearms-esque. Same colored teams with a similar look. Sure the gameplay is different with cool classes, but the look is crucial.

Did you read the interview, Gazaar? What you saw in the magazines a few years ago is NOT the TF2 that is being developed now. That was the whole point of this post...

That is: To further emphasize the fact that they have moved on, and the game is nothing like it was before. It apparently looks absolutely nothing like those old HL engine screenshots. You don't seriously think valve would come out with a product that is of lesser (or equal) quality than an amateur HalfLife mod, do you?

I'd call it more of an overloaded obsession when it comes to defending the likes of Valve (and NS! ). To the point of making myself look like an idiot sometimes.

Yeah, anger fits in there somewhere too... hehehe.
