My Hard Drive Melted!

<div class="IPBDescription">because my fan was clogged with dust</div> This is just an experience im going thru...

After three years my p3 500 has not been opened.

One day my computer ceased to work so i opened her up for te first time in a long time, to my horror, the hard drive was semi-melted. It turned out my fan was 99.9% clogged with dust and the thing just overheated and boiled up!

The next choice, i regret.

Thinking my computer was doomed and id have to start anew, i proceeded to remove the hard drive. I decided, i need a bigger case anyway. So i removed EVERY SINGLE COMPONENT, the motherboard, everything. Its all sitting on a non-conductive alfoil/plastic bag mixture.

I never got that new case i thought i'd need, and i still havent figured out how to put my computer back together (dont know how it all plugs into the motherboard) I'm going to get it nicley fixed up on the weekend tho, with TWO new hdd's (one for my precious games and their custom files, one for the evil system files, and internet programs) and a new copy of WIN 98.

Hmm, im moving soon, my new house has a built in lan for three computers! might get some network stuff too........... <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

The fan on my old Geforce 2 was pretty stuffed, so I unscrewed it from the board and gave it a good scrubbing with a few Q-tips. I put it back on, put everything together and booted the computer.

Dang thing sounded like a freaking racecar shifting gears all the time after that. So annoying i had to get a new card alltogether <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> ( could have gotten a replacement fan for a few bucks, but it was time to upgrade anyways <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> )

Yeah i've had a couple of cpu fans go racecar on me, I have discovered however that the simple application of WD40 or other lubricating oil all over the bloody thing makes it work much quieter ^_^

My card Geforce IV Ti4200 had almost the same thing...

Every time I started the computer it started to sound like a jet engine the fan. After some couple of weeks I decided to buy a new one... and it works perfectly... almost. It spins 5000 in a minute so it sounds pretty high... but not that I get deaf. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

A new copy of win98 is not getting nicely fixed up. Thats getting nicely arsed up. 98 is such a crap operating system it makes children in africa cry. Upgrade to at least win2000.

    Tips

Check you fan to your HD every month or so, clean the dust out, spray some wd40 on the ball.
Check your vid card fan (if it has one) every few weeks or so, clean the dust out. If it goes racecar noise spray wd40.
If your vidcard does not have a fan on it, buy a fan, and try to posistion it so it can blow air on it.

Also, try and buy a water cooling system. I got a nice one from CoolingXtreme for 90 bucks, and it keeps my comp at a nice cool 30degrees, I also have 8 fans in this baby. The sound really relaxes me.

My fan stopped on my video card a while ago, so I got a new fan to put on. ANyway, I could only attach it with electrical tape, and to my horror, one night it fell off and started grinding against my NIC card. I managed to stop the computer without any serious damage though.

However, the fan is now 2-part epoxied onto my heat sink. It's NEVER coming off again <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->.

When I put my new video card in, it was two years since the last time i opened it (to put a CD Burner in), and when I opened it I found to my horror lots upon lots of dust and, surprise, SPIDER WEBS!!

I didnt find a spider though, and I move the computer at least 4 times a year (to and from my dorm)

What a stupid spider!!! How could he possibly catch bugs if ...... oh wait, you use Windows right? He probably got enough bugs to retire on, and moved out. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Heh, that'd be a good start to an interesting thread - "post a pic of your pc's innards".

Well, we've got a thread active for posting a pic of your computer area, one to post your PC specs, and even one for slamming one's own head against a keyboard. Why not just show off the inner bits too?

Some people have spent a lot of money modding their cases with lights, fans, windows, even windowing their hard drives (risky, but looks great). Anyone else want to start the thread? Sadly, my case is mind-numbingly boring. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
