this is a quote from a post by Supernorn making fun at the people who wont leave Flayra alone. i laughed at this. Not at Supernorn but at the text.

I find the new "haX0r" language to be very funny. How do people come up with this? Who comes up with it. It all started with "elite" and now look where it has evolved too.

it would seem that the ending 0r can be attached to anything. suX0r, haX0r, r0x0R, etc.
And dont forget to reverse and omit key letters when u tyep it maeks yuo lok colre i geuss.

I was in a server one day and our marine who was scouting for the hives actualy took the time to type

i was like WHAT!?! it was like he was typing in a foreign language. "Oh the hive is in maintence !!!"

Now i must admit that didnt take too long to figure out but once i saw this one sentence and i (and the rest of our team) was like.. Well one the team commander summed it up best over voice chat.

"What the hell did you just say?"
Personaly I think this is more funny then a bad thing. If u have never been here go to this site and watch the film. It may take a while to load if u have slow internet. Its William SHakespears Hamlet (Flash movie with stick figures). They all talk in Hax0r.

Its funny. http://uninteresting.myby.co.uk/noeffort/hamlet.htm

Do a google search for leet romeo and juliet. The guy that did it got such a response that he made a second one that is Hamlet.
BTW, Claudius wearing a Burger King crown made me fall out of my chair. Both are pretty damn funny if you've ever actually seen a person leetspeak constantly.

Ahh yes, "elite", ""elite"" as it were.

    j00 5u><0r!

Why oh why do people type that garbage, that barstardization of english?

    There may be one explanation.

According to the local newspapers "Odd Spot", a primary schooler wrote up an english assignment in sms text shorthand, which is very very very closely related to ""elite"".

For the benefit of those whom havent used a mobile phone for SMS text messaging, take this example:

    English: "I Love you"

    SMS: "I luv u"

    "elite": "I ||_|\/ U" or "| 0\/\/nz0r3d j00"

Continuing on, the primary schoolers excuse for writing up her essay in that format was that she found it much easier then standard english

This may follow on to those who type almost exclusively in "elite". They simply do not understand, or do not have the wish to understand the proper mechanics of grammar and english.

I may point out however that occasional iterations of "elite" are entirely acceptable for humourous situations, such as bagging those that continually use it; Example

    "elite" Dude: "OMG j00 fu><|n6 h4><0r!"

Guy 1: "What? What did that nutter say?"

    Guy 2: "+|_|rn 0ff j00r 4|mb0+ l4m3r!"

    Guy 1: "What the hecks?"

    "elite" Dude: "0m6 OmG Ogm! j00 sux0r!"

Guy 2: *shoots "elite" Dude with HMG while "elite" dude was typing the above*

    "elite" Dude: "OMG F|_|><|n6 h4x0r!"

    Etc etc etc ad infinitum...

To sum up, "elite" will never go away as long as there are illiterate fools that wish to use it in place of standard english. Feel free to point and laugh, but always reserves a small portion somewhere in your heart to pity them...

I could understand the use of shorthand in a game. No need to waste additional time using proper spelling. It's certainly easier to type "fade at processing" than "Oh dear goodness. A mean Fade is attacking processing. Send reinforcements as soon as possible."

Perhaps a long time ago, if someone were that elite, he or she could really rub it into someone else's face by taking the time to type it out that way. Instead of spending time and energy finding ways to beat the enemy, the elite take that time and energy and put it into using uncommon characters to insult you. They have plenty of time and energy available to them and if they don't need that much time and energy to beat someone, why use all of it? He or she might be half asleep and can still beat you. Call it a calling card or M.O. or even a signature of the leet. Now it's everywhere. It's not unique and it really gets me irritated.

I guess the kids just don't know that "elite" was old back in 1994. Seeing that rape of written language is just one more reason to hate pirate groups, for they originally gave us this gift of pain.

Why, oh why do people take extra time to make their messages illegible? Is incomprehensibility a virtue?

I seem to recall reading somewhere that "elite" sp34k was invented by hackers 'back in the day' to talk about hacking. At the time the figures of authority had set up programs to sift through chat messages for various hacking related words. Being the thinkers that they were, the hackers bastardised the english language through creative use of symbols, the resulting text couldn't be picked up by the programs but could be deciphered with relitive ease.

As for "elite" sp34k in games. Can anyone spell 'try-hard wannabes'??

    It's not new.

The only "elite" being spoken currently is used as satire or parody. Of course, there isnt actually anyone *seriously* using "elite" for this satire to be the subject of. People are imitating a type of user that doesn't exist, the only people speaking "elite" are speaking it as a parody, in effect they are all imitating eachother. It usually ends up being used as an insult by falsely imitating somebody you want to appear retarded, or for non-aggresive comedy. If you want to trace it back to a point, it probably dates back to usenet or before, and was probably a pretty straight joke.

I more-or-less live on quakenet, and that is a ridiculous stereotype. Alternatively if that is a quote, they were probably insulting your intelligence.

Believe it or not, there's a pretty significant difference between just miss-spelling words, and managing to make it comical - see JeffK for details.

The complete "elite" alphaB as told by me who doesn't know anything about it:

    A 4 - B |3 - C ( - D |) - E 3 - F /= - G 9 - H |-| - I 1 (or |) - J / - K |< - L \ - M /|\ - N |\| - O 0 - P |> - Q @ - R |2 - S 5 - T 7 - U |_| - V \/ - W \|/ - X >< - Y \| - Z 7_

Of course, "CK" is always subbed with "X" and the "E" in "er" is replaced with an O

    Example:

    Hacker -
    HaXor

    Or, for the more advanced:

    h4X0r

    Or for the stupidly bored:

    |-| 4 >< 0 |2

More than any one man ever needed to know.

Wish you were right. Regardless of whether one tries to be a JeffK-esque parody (which is pointless, since one JeffK is enough, thankyouverymuch), lines and lines of "h0w do j00 BUy sH17?" is not funny. It just makes you look retarded. The fun potential was lost a long time ago.

Heh, I remember this guy that had a server plug-in(I think he ran a CS server) that translated normal speech to "elite".
    ADMIN: "its time for..."
    T:"time for what?"
    ADMIN: "31337!"
    CT: "31337?"
    CT: "\/\/|-|4+ +|-|3 |-|311 4|23 j00 +31|<1|\|6 4|b0|_|+?"
    CT: "\/\/TF?"
    CT: "|_0|_!"
etc, sounded like it was real fun.
    EDIT: stupid censoring.

if you were wondering the origns of "elite speak" came from all the way back to usnet days. People used this to get around workd filters and as more and more words were fileterd, they had to mutate more and more. Ex: porn, pron, pr0n... etc things just escalated from there. Now its just used as a joke most of the time.

[edit] There is a nice article in 2600 fall 2k2 issue about the history of "31337SP34K" [/edit]

I did not bother to read the responses to this thread

"leet" or "hex" speak or whatever the funk people want to call it is plain retarded.

If you call yourself elite, you obviously arent.

But what pisses me off the most is the misspelling of the word "own" or "owned" some jerkoff accidentally hit "p" instead of "o" and now we got a bunch of craptards repeating the mistake.

    I feel much better now
