Something For You Guys To Ponder...

In regards to my vid card...
Went ahead and purchased a radeon 9700 pro off a seller on ebay, with a pretty good rating.

Only thing is, with my card, i'm getting like 30-40fps in certain areas playing unreal tournament 2003. I'm wondering...they look a lot alike, is it possible he may have passed onto me a regular radeon 9700 and not the pro?

How would I be able to tell between the two? They're both red, have capacitors all over them, and have that little bridge thing for the power connection.

On the board itself was a sticker, which conveniently said "Radeon 9700 Pro" on it, but we all know that's really not an indication of anything as far as ebay auctions sometimes go...

Any help that can be offered is greatly appreciated, I always get sage advice on these forums

I don't know, but can you look at it's properties through windows. or when your computer starts up? The first thing you shouild see is.

    Radeon 9700 Pro
    128 MB

    Or something like that

Should be in either your Display settings or, in Device Manager.

    Device Manager:
    Control Panel >
    System >
    Hardware Tab >
    Device Manager >

Under the Display drop down, it will say your video card name.

Loosely related, but you should be getting way more than 30fps whether its a Pro or not...

Yeah, I've been fighting with it for some time.

In a very small map, with nothing but tight corridoors, sure, I can get around 70-80fps.

Then as soon as the map opens up a lil wider...boom, a huge drop down to like 50fps, most of the time more. I dunno, I'm stumped. Every other game performs excellently, think it might just be something with that game?

ut2k3, is a known system hog. They didnt really revolutionise the engine, merely uped the pixel count. Where as the doom 3 engine is going to have mulitple passes on a single pixel (hence up to 128bit colour support).

SOrry to digress, but the thing is you probably need atleast 512mb ram for ut2k3 especially on the bigger maps, i dont care how fast your vid card is, ut2k3 is very ram intensive. Also try putting your page file on a seperate physical hard drive, and format the partition fat32.

This should speed it up alittle.

Hmm, well, I've got a gig of pc2100 ram, plus I've set the page file for windows xp to 1.5 times that.

    The processor's a 2.4ghz.

Other than that, I think my system *should* be able to handle everything.

    *boggled*
