How do I do this? I tried bind "e" "exec exit" but I guess thats only for execing a config or alias or something like that...
I want to bind a key to "exit" in console so I dont have to pull down the console and type it.

?

Thanks

Whoever told you to always put an "exec" infront of teh commands was lying.
Just put something like "bind e "exit"" without the first and last quotations.

I reccomend not using E for exit though, because honestly, you do need a "Use" key, and you're going to be using that "Use" key ALL THE TIME (more as a marine than an alien, but still). So you really should have the use key close to WASD. E works great for this.

Unless you prefer to use the arrowkeys for movement of course...
(those buttons are on your keyboard for a reason! use them! )

Using the arrowkeys is depreciated for the following reasons:

To reload (as a marine), you must either take your hand off the mouse, or take your hand off the movement keys.
Same with weapon changing.
Same with building stuff.
Same with the Flashlight/Hivesight
Less keys nearby available to bind other useful things, such as CHUCKLE for the aliens... which I consider a necessary tool, even an addition weapon (if only psychological in nature) ...or Health/Ammo/Orders requests as a marine.

With the WASD layout, there's so much right there at your fingertips. There's a reason the experienced players use it, and there's a reason why it's the default controls.

To reload (as a marine), you must either take your hand off the mouse, or take your hand off the movement keys.

mouse3

Same with weapon changing.

mouse4

Same with building stuff.

Enter, you only use 3 finger for those arrowkeys (and it's right above the Shift-key, shift=jump)

Same with the Flashlight/Hivesight

mouse5

Less keys nearby available to bind other useful things, such as CHUCKLE for the aliens... which I consider a necessary tool, even an addition weapon (if only psychological in nature) ...or Health/Ammo/Orders requests as a marine.

I'm using the ins/del/home/end/pgup/pgdwn buttons, right above the arrowkeys. and for taunting & additional requests I right-click

And my mouse's y-axis is inverted as well! Oldschool playa - straight up yo! .

button3(Mousewheel when you click it) = reload
I use the numpad for movement, and all my weapons and stuff along those line(Use key, voice comes, duck) are centralised around it.

for some of the ns specific binds for commanding etc please consult this handy little table

For binding stuff, all you do it, literally:

bind key console-command.

It's as simple as that. eg: Bind x slot1. bind y exit. bind z +attack. bind mouse1 "kill;unbindall;quit"

Please don't tell me you're serious about the arrowkeys ?
hehe
1. mousebuttons 3-5 and mousewheel
Not everyone have those
2. shift and ctrl and del and ins etc etc ar still further away that e and q if you use wasd...
And I know
I used to be a arrowuser myself but please try wasd
Much better
Much much better
hehe
The arrows are only good for people who cant find the wasd keys because they just started playing games cause they heard of this "Countar-stike" everyone's talking about and thus must have huge spaces between the buttons to be able to feel the difference...
Oh
And im not flaming...
You're just imagining...

Well my friend uses arrow keys and has all the buttons that playing needs... He uses numpad a lot and enter, shift, ctrl etc.. I used those buttons myself about 2 years ago . I'm just saying that it's just as easy to play with arrow keys. But I have used to the WASD layout and propably won't change it for a long time.

WASD layout is optimal for right-handed players, to my mind, because it's more comfy to have your hands at shoulder-width for long periods of time.

Left-handed players, of course, will have their mice to the left of the keyboard, so using the numpad (or arrow keys, if that's your fetish) makes more sense in that case.

....
You can't say any key configuration is "better" than another, since it is completely personal preference. Some of us played descent2 back in the day and the arrow key config was easiest for it. I've used the arrows for years. And it's not like we're telling others to use them, rather, we're just saying how they can be used (the 5 button mouse makes the arrow keys a viable option).
....
And yes, you are flaming when you say that the keys are only good for me because I can't find the wasd keys and I just started playing games cause I heard of Countar-stike (which should be spelled counter-strike) especially considering that I played counterstrike way back in the beta days. Actually, I probably started gaming while you were still in diapers.

wasd sucks because the w doesnt line up right. i put my index finger on arrow keys, pinky on right shift, thumb on crouch, ring finger on \ (teamchat) and im done. if i need to use my use key i have it bound to enter, i need to move faster i shift my hand over to arrows. MUCH better than the not-lined-up-right wasd.

Duck: I can too say one config is better than another !
And I told you you're imagining me flaming !
And it IS spelled Countar-stike ! ! ! !

whoa this has wandered somewhat off topic.

For what it's worth I use arrow keys, KP_ins = duck, KP_end = jump, CTRL, Del, PGDN allow one touch weapon changes, mouse3 for reload, I haven't got mouse4 and mouse5 bound yet as I don't really need any other binds close. KP_Del is voice comm too, forgot about that.

I defy anyone to say I am inhibited by the keys I use
[Lighthearted] A player is only as good as the key setup he uses, and as WASD is best and I use WASD, that means I are teh winnar[/Lighthearted]
Can we PLEASE get back on topic and stop going down this poor path which has absolutely no backing either way - a player is as good as a player is. Cripes, when I first started gaming, I used keyboard only and still whooped those lame "mouse users" bottoms

So back to topic - someone said it already but I feel repeating it here may help
bind x "say I am a troglodyte"
bind F12 exit
bind F4 "say I was about to readyroom but that is lame so I won't after all"

exec is used for "executing" a script (.cfg) hence when your game starts up it *effectively* does this command:
exec config.cfg

If you wanted to do that again (because that would be clever) you might type in the console (or edit your config.cfg)
bind c "exec config.cfg"
then press c

Hope this helps (BTW I only use " when there are spaces in the <command> bit, so *bind MOUSE1 +attack* doesn't have any " and *bind s "say Hello muppets"* does) That's because I'm a pernickety fiddly git

Thats' an interesting point. I'm right-handed and I use arrow keys, and I've found I move the keyboard accross the desk so that the arrow keys are shoulder-width apart

I just prefer them to WASD. My config evolved by keeping the arrow keys where they are, and moving everyinthg else (weapons, walking, use, reload, fire2) around it.

To me this is a good thing, when you have your hands placed reasonably far apart its more comfortable to have them at at angle rather than straight ahead...

recently i've tried using a wasd-style combination in the middle of the board (namely rdfg) to make more room for bound keys - this way i can use alt and z as ctrl + shift and have an extra 6 or 7 keys within easy reach
