Try tesing you mic in windows using sound recorder, set the sound levels for best clarity not volume!

It could be if your using a cheapie soundcard/microphone or a low spec PC.
Cheap microphone* = recording duff under all circumstances, worse in game. Buy plantronics DSP 400 headset.
Cheap soundcard* = cant keep mic recording and playback going full duplex. Buy plantronics DSP 400 headset.
Low spec PC = Pc cant keep up the processing required to encode and decode sound whilst generating 3d frames, this problem is emphasised by low spec sound and or graphics cards. This one probably cant be fixed by buying a dsp 400 <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Give us a little more info on your set up and we'll try to help.

*Cheap in this case refers to manufacturing costs not how much you paid for it. For example I got a 60p mic off a web reseller which worked kinda ok (say 50% ok), but saw the same mic in P* W*rld for ?14.99.

Try opening your NS config file and add the line

    voice_dsound "0"

i used to have the same problem but i just fixed it.

adding that to my config cleared up everything.
