Playing Ns On A Slower Computer Makes Me

<div class="IPBDescription">appreciate my faster computer more.</div> So I'm home for spring break from college, and went from an athlon xp 1800+/gf4 ti4200 to a athlon 800mhz/geforce 3. Of course I'm bored out of my mind, so I decided to play NS.

It is such a different experience.

Playing on a slower comp forced me to play on a lower resolution, and suddenly the muzzle flash just seems bigger to me, making it much harder to aim. I guess it's with the lower fps/quality that causes this.

Also building buildings takes what seems to be twice the time.

And most annoying of all, I can't even fly right with jetpacks. It's like it stops working in mid-air, and I fall, even though I'm using the gas.

So to the NS players with slower computers, I really understand your plight. And I kept on thinking to myself that my computer isn't fast enough...

Trust me, you had it good with both comps, my 333mhz w/ATI Rage Fury graphics card, and 56k connection really limits my potential online. Well, I still lead with skulk kills when I am karhaa, so I wonder how well I could do on a real gaming rig?

I have NO problem with my 600mhz atlon, must be because of my geef2GTS. (30 - 60 fps)
I am not going to play with less resolution/detail just to get all the fps advantages of 1.0 .

800mhz with Gf3 is nothing to sneeze at, buddy... Pentium 2 400mhz with Gf2 GTS 32mb, and 128mb of PC133 ram, anyone?

I did some tests a while back, and although I don't think the size of the muzzle flash really changes, below 40 fps the flash is a constant blob, and above 45 it flickers distinctly so that you see through it at alternate instants.

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Also building buildings takes what seems to be twice the time.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> Yes, there is an FPS bug (which many HL mods exhibit) that ties your FPS to build speed and weapon discharge speed and jetpack recharge speed. You don't notice it that much with other mods because they tend to be run-around-and-shoot-shoot-shoot and people don't notice in all the action.

Again, some messing around I did a while back... At 26 FPS and below, the jetpack does not have sufficient thrust to hold someone against the ceiling once they've reached it. Above 26 and you *can* press your noggin to the ceiling.

Are you running the latest video drivers? Also, if it's not your usual computer, have you checked for spyware that may have been installed on the machine? This is using the HL engine, an 800 with a gf3 should be more than enough power to play decently. I'm running a 660 with a gf2 and I get between 60-99 fps. I'm running win98se and I'm obsessive about keeping my machine clean from hidden background tasks.

IE. hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and identify all the programs that are running. I try to minimize this list. If you are running gator or any similar type programs then they are probably killing your fps. If the machine has any peer-to-peer program installed, then it is almost certain it has spyware/trojans installed on it.

    Oh, and I'll also mention that I'm playing with a res of 1024x768; P 660, gf2, 512 MB SDRAM = 60-99 fps.

i guess its just super slow b/c it's been loaded with junk... my brothers aren't as comp literate, so it gets loaded with stuff, plus other people use it too... lots of things are kinda messed up about it (esp. sound), but i dont have the time to reformat it right now.

Oh.... kay.... Another nugget of wisdom is that if you take a lerk and a skulk to the top of the Viaduct hive in ns_nothing, then the skulk will take 60% of the time the lerk takes to fall to the ground, despite the lerk supposedly being a creature of movement and grace. (The lerk craters on impact.)

Bah... You haven't seen anything until you play NS on my old system:

    2 megs of video power
    100 mhz M Cyrix II
    256 ram

And oh my god... Even with every single config change and thing prodded, directly after you leave the ready room, ping is at a steady 400-1000, and that's if your lucky.

That makes sense, actually. Be default, the lerk doesn't have his wings open and the fall you describe is much like the dive of a bird of prey. If the lerk has its wings open (i.e. jump is held) I am sure it will descend rather slowly and gracefully.

    Oh, and your sig is great <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

My Right is a 1733 MHz Athlon XP, 512 MB, GeForce 3. Runs at 90-100 fps at most maps, some maps drops to 80 fps. Add cheating death etc. and it can go lower as 70 fps. If I go under water it strangely seems to drop drastically in fps.
