It is a brand new release, and like most MS products it is still a little buggy, in my case during the install.
And it still doesn't change the fact that you cannot DELETE the program. <u>That in itself</u> is reason enough not to install it. I don't go around trashing Microsoft. I use Internet Explorer. Outllook Express. I use the old (i.e. doesn't kill your CPU) Media Player a LOT. I have MS Office and all my machines at home are running on Microsoft OS's. But I ran into major headaches ith a simple upgrade, and the icing on the cake is that is does nothing on the user end that media player 7.1 already doesn't. So basically it is a big waste of time. I think that was worthy of a friendly warning to those who might want to avoid a similiar problem. I'm sure that Microsoft will figure it out sooner or later, but in the meantime I'd have to recommend sticking with 7.1
One last note, and I shoulda mentioned this the first time: This was not a over-the-net install, this was a downloadable EXE install to a laptop. You may have no problems at all if you have the option to take the online update route.

I use Media Player for videos (if not DivX) and music for the simple reason that my sound card, a Hercules Game Theatre XP, has hardware support for sound with Windows Media Player and doesn't for WinAMP.
It serves the purpose, and is better than RealPlayer or Winamp3 (winamp2.xx is more arguable)
well, thx for the warning but for some magical reasons i can't seem to encounter the effect you've mentioned. first of all, i have no problem setting other programs to work when certain file types are ran, even if the file type is a media player 9 default. second, well, media player 9 rocks. i had terrible problems with ALL the versions including 7. that's the first version of media player that actually *works*, and does it good.

I HATE Realplayer, its like a damn virus. After you install it you spend 10 minutes disabling all the crap it does to you system. Even after disabling all its stuff, I STILL get pop-ups for some creappy pop band every so often.

Believe what you want. I gives a dangnabbit less.
