<div class="IPBDescription">NS is NOT winning!</div> Howdy All,
I voted about a week ago for NS in the "best mod of 2002" poll going on at FilePlanet (http://www.fileplanet.com/polls/new_mod/). At that time we were light years ahead of all the other mods.
I check it today and to my great surprise I see that "Desert Combat (BF1942) is beating us by 14.1%.
What the heck!?!?!!!?!? Get out there and vote!!
(I sure hope that some hacker on the Desert Combat side has figured out how to fake out the poll. It is hard for me to fathom that any other mod is better than NS in 2002.) <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Edit:
oh and according to Fileplanet, the poll only registers one vote per person. Which in my opinion is a total lie, but lets not get into that.
We NS players must not be good at voteing! <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> Go and click the link on the poll for NS and rate it 5 guys!

yet another reason why you shouldn't believe a rating system. Although I would have a hard time deciding between a 4 and a 5 for NS, looking at the ratings people give is <b>useless</b> for me. Look at all the fanbois! "omg tihs g4m3 is teh roxxor! Evry1 vote for it!" You shouldn't vote a 5 because you like a game, but because it deserves it.
I play counterstrike a LOT and I'd give it a 4, hands down. Excellently made, with the unfortunate side-effect of being a Team Deathmatch game instead of Team-based objective or whatever it was supposed to be game.

Not everyone downloads NS from fileplanet - I got mine from blueyonder.co.uk, iirc.
I think DC is a larger mod though, and fewer servers are willing to host it; therefore fileplanet gets more hits. DC is almost the same exact game as BF1942 out of the box, it just has different equipment. NS gave Half-Life a total makeover, for the better! As far as mods go, it surpasses all, imho.
In DCs defense I will say that it changes a lot more then cosmetics. The tanks and planes are faster, have different capabilites and radar. They do not have any tools to work with. No SDK, not map editors, etc.
It is a close race, but at this point I would say that NS should get it.
gee...i wonder where YOU came from... *looks at DC Forums* <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Ummm..yes it does. It doesn't look right in first person because damn EA ( <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo--> ) hasn't given them tools to make custom animations.

its a shame developers arent as nice as Valve...must be really frustrating for you over there.... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
I guess for me added equipment does not a mod make. It's a different of opinions, and that's cool. From what I saw on the DC site, I was not impressed. To be honest, I haven't tried it, but it did not appear to be anything more than a few new toys added to the same basic game. The fact that they are doing all of the work without any modmaking tools is very impressive, and they should be commended(and EA beaten). However, if I have to choose the best mod which is going to get my vote; a total conversion which nicely merges the RTS and FPS genres while maintaining a sense of fun and comradrie, or a mod which added a few new toys... albiet very nice, fun toys.
For me the choice is clear. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> Luckily there are plenty of gamers to keep active communities for both projects. Hopefully, both teams will get all the support they deserve.

If you think pumping HMG rounds into a retreating onos is fun have a try at killing one with a lvl3 shotty. Hmmm fun. I'll never forget that round on ns_lost. We had them stalemated untill they bilebomed us <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
As far as DC or BF1942 goes I havent played eather.
But I think it's funny (strange, not haha) that something that has been downloaded 34,981 times has way more rateings (5164) then something that was downloaded 55,653 (only 231 rateings).
Sounds to me like NS players are just to lazy to vote <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
you can check the current numbers for the mods at these links:

DC - <a href='http://www.fileplanet.com/files/110000/118194.shtml' target='_blank'>http://www.fileplanet.com/files/110000/118194.shtml</a>
As for the poll showing anything, polls are overated. It's remakably easy to spoof any poll open the the general public, especialy web based ones. Take anything you see on the web with a grain of salt.
Heck, we all know that CS sucks even thought it's a huge number of people play it <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
(incase you didnt notice that last comment was a joke)
As for innovation, DC's got some good ideas, and little help. NS kicks their butt mod-wise for innovation, but that's a personal (and statistical) opinion.
And for those complaining about DC being unbalanced, try balancing the HMG/JP rush. Or other "issues" in NS (like hitboxes). NS isn't perfect, either. [/soapbox]
First off, using File Planet to compare the number of downloads is pointless since BOTH mods have PILES of download mirrors. Just because NS was downloaded more from FilePlanet doesn't mean more people downloaded it overall.
Next, as for players, let's be honest here. If you compare stats you have DC with at least 4x the number of players and servers at any given time, usually more than that. I've seen DC with 10,000 people playing, and I can't think of a time when I saw more then 2000 people playing NS at a given time. DesertCombat is to BF1942 as CS is to Half-Life. The numbers support this. There's no shame in admitting that.
Third, let's be honest here. The vote is nothing more than a popularity contest. If they have a bigger fan base (which based on the number of people they have playing they do) then it stands to reason that they could likely have higher vote counts. So why draw up all the conspiracy therories?
In the end, does it really matter? Whether or not NS gets an award is not going dimish my opinion of it, and I doubt it will impact the developers at all. Sure NS is a great mod, but I play it because it is fun, not because it gets awards.

Is it really that popular? God...
About it being a popularity contest, unfortunately that's the point. People notice games that have big followings. The more votes a game gets, the more publicity. If someone who's played none of the mods on the list looks at the result when it's all over and goes "gee, this mod won, I haven't tried it, it must be good" and that mod isn't NS, NS loses. So it's good for a mod to be in the spotlight, however dubious the voting procedure to get it there.
And just to throw in my 2c to the argument, I haven't played DC (I don't own BF1942) but I prefer an innovative game to a game with planes and tanks and boring real life weapons. If I'm way off the mark, never mind <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
