Let's not get too worried about graphic card horsepower. Carmack is a genius with rendering engines, Quake3 is a testament to that given how smoothly it runs compared to other engines that came out afterwards. Quake3 blows Lithtech2 out of the water for example.

Carmack is aiming at a moving target and probably knows some Nvidia product secrets the rest of us don't. Also what Doom3 runs on NOW is not what it will run on when its released in a year or so. I bet it needs a 1.5+ Gigahertz machine with 1 gig of RAM just to run passably in its current in-production state, but that all changes with optimization.

I'm definitely eager to get my hands on the tools. The maps will not need a lighting compile (The big CPU/Memory/Time hog), given that the map file is used as-is by the game itself. That means all dynamic lighting (Again hinted at by his comment about being efficient with lighting). I don't know about other mappers, but I only use one light per fixture and tweak the hell out of it to get the right look, so I should be fine. With dynamic lighting you can't place sourceless lights, otherwise the shadows will look really odd... and I imagine using excessive numbers of light entities would tax the engine on runtime.

Hey, the reason the shadows are pitch black in those shots is because there is only one light source in those scenes.  If you watch the movie that i already posted the link for, you'll see that in-game with multiple shots, the shadows are not all pitch black.
