Sooner or later... I can't imagine they would leave this issue unresolved.
Personally I think it's a bit of a problem. I see marines exploiting the crouch hitbox everywhere I go but why the issue is so evil is because crouching in a corner is kind of a natural thing for a player to do. They make themselves a smaller target, they are somewhat hidden from view, and attacks can only come from a few possible directions.
I'm sure people don't exploit this bug on purpose but a fix is necessary.
I can't imagine how deadly I'll be when it does get fixed... I'm deadly enough with the skulk already...
one time i was at the main door to noname hive in whatever map that is with port engine, subspace, and noname...
i was a marine, and jumped onto the railing that is to the side of the door to noname, and found myself stuck in it and not able to move. however, that didnt stop me from killing 8 skulks before dying because i was in such a position that the only place they could bite me was in a screwy hitbox location, and i had like 3 of them biting me at once. one finally found a spot where i took damage and killed me, but it sure took a while.
As for the 'lerk vanishing in the ceiling' bug... that one's a simple fix, actually.
For the modellers out there:
Load up the alien3.mdl skeleton and mesh, link in the flap_wings sequence.
Now, see that 'origin' bit, for the base bone? It's a01 since they didn't 'name' the bones for the Lerk at all, but just used autogenerated numberings...
Lower that bone, essentially the whole model, by -27 in the Y direction on the jump and flap_wings animations. It's not so simple on the land sequence, but basically you have to keep the model's original in the same place for it to align with the hitbox right on the Lerk.
The explanation I heard for the hitbox bug had something to do with collision hulls and the HL engine's limits. Basically, each alien and the marines share two basic hitboxes -- marine standing and marine crouching. Marine crouching is what skulks, gorges, and lerks use (along with crouching marines ), and the standing marine hitbox is used by fades and onii. At least I'm pretty sure that was the explanation. In any event, adding more hitboxes/hulls to the game makes the HL engine die somehow. Soooo... I'm not sure if this is going to be fixable or not, judging by that
I've been on both sides of the bug, and sometimes it just requires a few extra bites/bullets, but sometimes it's utterly TERRIBLE. Once I played in a small game on ns_bast, we were only really messing around so I rushed off to Engine Room through the vents from marine spawn with just my 2 LMG clips and 2 Pistol clips. When I got there I discovered it was the aliens hive, I quickly unloaded all of my ammo into it. (This was before 1.04 I believe, the hive didn't start at full health.) With no ammo left, I ran towards the hive with the intention of jumping on top of it, and knifing it to death. One badly placed jump later, I ended stuck between the hive and the engine. Well I was stuck, so I started knifing. Shortly afterwards the skulks arrived and started chomping at me, my health didn't move... 3 knifed skulks later, dozens of missed bites and a lot more damage to the hive, one came from underneath me and managed to actually damage me. (Although even that seemed to miss 4 out of 5 hits.) As my body slumped the the floor, the hive died, the timer began...we won the game because of a (lucky?) hitbox bug. Cheap, yep. It was accidentsl and rather funny, but it does show how serious it can be when a single marine with no upgrades or heavy weapons can take out the aliens only hive single handedly, just minutes into the round.
