Am I A Sucky Gorge?

or were the skulks just lame
I consider myself to be a pretty good gorge.
We were playing on ns_caged, started in vent hive, and i went gorge almost straight away. I built a res node and locked the door on the way to vent - down the tunnel, with a def chamber.

popped up a couple more towers and asked the skulks if generator was free (knowing that sewer hive was not) No response so i reccee it out, its empty, so i start building hive and putting up def.

Then the abuse starts. I get told i'm a n00b, that i am a lame gorge and everything else under the sun. When i ask why, the response comes that we 'need more def' and that 'i havent defended hives and res points enough;

'SUYF' i say 'thats you're job, and thats why you have hivesight... so that you can see whats under attack, and go and kill the marine attacking it.'

'noob gorge'
At this point, one other guy goes gorge. Not that bad i think, since i have put up four res nodes, giving us 5, along with the original one at vent, the res comming in can cope with two gorges, though i'd prefer if he waited till the fades were around.

Then i start hearing the clunk clunk of marines footsteps, and the sound of them building away. I'm in gen, with a couple of def chambers under the hive so it goes up real quick, and a WOL blocking off the marines advance at me.

I get on the comm and tell people to get to gen now and keep it clear, while i go skulk myself, carapace up and go in for the attack. I get killed pretty quick, but i carapace up again and get on my way to gen hive again, telling everyone else to do the same.

Soon enough, they start sieging the hive, so i'm out of there, trying to put pressure on marine base or sewer so the other skulks can get into gen and bring down thier (now) minibase.

To no avail, hive goes down, and I say 'see ya later' to my lamer team, after more abuse and being blamed for loosing hte hives (because i didn't defend it well enough)

Clearly, i'm a bad gorge....

The only thing that sucked were the skulks... i mean come on! You rapidly got up a second hive and started to set up defences there. the only bad thing that you did was you didnt play completely as a member of the team (they wanted def towers),but its really a minor point.

    Summary: No you didnt suck!

    i second that.

your team of skulks should of at least helped their gorge, what the **** were they doing ?

it is most definitely the skulks' job to defend nodes... there is no reason a gorge should have to slow the process of getting hive 2 by placing down an OT when a skulk can come in, bite twice, and be on his way with a kill-to-feed-his-ego to top it off.

Funny how things get ignored or turned around on a diffrent team, you have to admit. I mean, had a marine commander set up nothing but turrets in the base, he'd be ridiculed as a noob, yet skulks never seem to have a problem requesting those self same devices on their side, and asking what amounts to an overweight dog stop what it's doing, that is, capping rez and getting new hives, and come help them, becuase they can't seem to do their job on their own.

    You do not suck.

They already had three def towers, two were under the new hive, and one was locking the door in the corridor to vent hive, infact i think there were about five on the map.

The defences they wanted were at the hive. They wanted me to defend up our starting hive so they didn't have to defend it :/

You got more than 4 RTs up + you got 3 Defence up + you got the hive up, they can't really say that you weren't doing your job as Gorge!

This doesn't work, now does it? AFAIK Def chambers don't speed up the building of any structure?

Or is the hive a very low HP when it's completed and starts spawning aliens?

It used to be that the hive started with very low HP, so a new hive could be killed in a couple of LMG clips. Since 1.04, the spawn at full health, so the defs would have made difference. Saying that, in the event of it being attacked, they would have helped it survive longer.

technically no, but it always seems like it does, and it doesn't hurt as it protects the hive once its built

You did a good job as Gorge, I would have to say the skulks dropped the ball in this instance, and you got them two hives pretty fast, so they can't complain. I would have to agree that you did a good job.

Certainly, he might have been a good gorge from his perspective, he even got the hive up and everything.

However, seeing it from the Skulks point-of-view and you'd have a different story. Who knows, they might have asked for defense chambers before he decided to save for the hive, so the marines were still dominating (one d chamber really does squat). Maybe the skulks were afraid of a future jp rush approaching, and defenses at the initial hive would have been the better choice. Perhaps they were complaining that he didn't build offense chambers ON the marines while they were building outside Gen, because instead he went Skulk.

Therefore, they are plenty of alternatives that trigger the way Skulks think towards the team Gorge, you just have to see it from different perspectives.

This one's entirely the fault of the skulks. It's the responsibility of the skulks to provide the defense until the second hive is on its way. If the gorge can afford defenses, they can afford a hive (a single, high quality WoL costs more than a hive anyway). In other words, whether the gorge gets defenses at three nodes or goes straight for the hive doesn't change the fact that the gorge, the res nodes, and the hive are vulnerable until this point.

It's the job of the gorge to minimise the time that the Kharaa are vulnerable. It's the job of the skulks to make sure the vulnerabilities aren't exploited while they exist (as well as hampering the marines).

I've played tons of games where we didnt even get D chambers till the second hive was already underway. The fact that these guys had one D chamber, and then a few more later, appears to me to be sub standard skulk players. Building O chambers and D chambers around res points is pretty wasteful. I don't see how its the gorges responsbility to protect the res points. The gorges job is to get the res built, maybe get early D chambers up if the skulks are facing some difficulties, and then get the second hive up as quickly as possible.

It looks to me like a text book build by yourself, with the addition of some O chambers at gen to compensate for the lack of skulk protection from your team. What were they all doing? Trying to take sewer hive?

I can certainly imagine they were trying to take sewer hive, as I have seen alien teams make that mistake too many times. They are all so busy attacking the hive the marines already occupy, that the totally unoccupied hive is left open and undefended, just waiting for a single marine to wander in and build a phase gate.

Nope, you're not at fault. Sounds like you had some bad teammates. Add on top of that the harrassment, and when the game ended, it was simply time to find a new server.

Give up on the jerks, but never give up on the game.

Speaking as an experienced gorge who has been playing as a gorge since 1.0 came out...

Good lord man, you were doing what took me some time to learn.

A gorge's priorities should be, in this order -

1.) The capture of at least three (3) additional resnodes to the starting one.
2.) Three defense chambers (preferably in the second hive location so the gorge can survive if a marine comes in while saving for res)
    3.) The second hive
4.) WoLs at the entrances to the hive (I fail to see how they are wall of lames, however, as O chambers absolutely suck without D chambers. Seriously, people, they die faster than turrets being eaten by skulks because the skulks have to run and stay alive or die and respawn, giving ample welding time.)
5.) Movement chambers when the second hive is complete, at least one at each hive, preferably two at each hive.
6.) Additional security of RNs (OCs and DCs)
7.) Joining teammates in the assault on the third hive (if captured) or the saving of res for the third hive (if clear)
8.) pwn as an Onos after dropping three Sensories.

The Skulk's priorities, in contrast -
    1.) Defend the gorge
    2.) Defend the gorge
    3.) Defend the gorge
    4.) Defend the res towers
5.) Assault the marines endlessly and keep them from 'teching up.'

Aminal, you were doing a phenominal job. I'd love to have you on my team as gorge (when I'm not gorge, a'course.)

Stop by Donce some time. 128.194.11.209:27015
