lemme explain
I've been play NS for awhile no, but I remember when I started I had quite a difficult time understanding the game. Specifically:
1. Building things.
2. The commander dropped weapons.
3. Getting upgrades.
4. The meaning of the upgrade icons.
5. Aliens started in one of 3 hives, instead of just one.
6. Multiple gorges are bad.
7. The upgrade model of the aliens.
Now, I know some of this is listed in the manual. My major problem was the manual focused a lot on the history of NS, and taking it from a marine perspective and all that. WHile there's no problem with that it can make for a confusing read. A more succinct manual would really help I think.

er well as I was saying, the manual is a nice read (wow at least I read the manual ) but it surely doesn't give any useful comments as to the actual gameplay. I believe 1.1 has a training... train (nonono not a hazard course) so that would be office of "manual" more or less.
oh yeah, and change these two things absolutely:
"if you're new to NS play marines" remove it altogether!
and "you can evolve, try it! go up then right in your popupmenu" (going gorge basically) Don't remove it, we don't want skulks for the whole game... tell them to go up, up again then left (fade) once they get the ressources. That would most likely be much more useful."
and say "the gorge class is a tricky class to play.. you would want to observe a few games before trying it out. One gorge error can cost you the game" or something along those lines
The popup help did help a bit, but I turned it off after a game... I used it to identify what building was what, but then when I first commanded a game, though, I pretty much knew where everything went.
For aliens though, it took a bit more time. IE: I never knew what the bar on the left of the screen ment (The resource bar) I could never figure it out. It always seemed to be around empty. Then as gorge.. I sort of figured out about building (Not sure how)
I remember someone on NS_Nothing was like "Hey, do you know how to jam the elevators?" I was like, nahh. And he told me to build under it and stack the chambers. That was the SAME game I figured out that the aliens had multiple weapons. When someone asked me to HEAL them, I asked "How?" he told me to hit "2"... HEAL SPRAY! W00t! First time it occured to me that aliens had more weapons. How to build DC's Movements, Sensory chambers themselves, I never understood. I never understood the upgrades, either.
Ah-- and nobody ever seemed to get mad at me for being a newbie commander or being another gorge. Now, people will constantly **** at you :/
It would be nice to have a manual that did STRAIGHT OUT tell you this. Understanding the upgrades, and how to build, etc. would be really nice.
The current manual is so outdated, too :/
That's what I mean, slideshows, FAQs, manuals, forums, all littered aroudn the place. The information is there it's just not consolidated.
When I entered my first game, all I had to do was ask some question and I was good to go, becuse I already knew, for example, that 'e' is the use key.
The controls and everything were very straightforward. I already knew about the right-click menu because I'd seen it in the trailer and thought "wow, that's cool", and I've played first-person shooters before, so I understood the concept of having multiple weapons, having a "use" key to do things, et cetera. And the hivesight wasn't hard at all to figure out, because most of the circles tell you what they are when you look at them. The exception being the yellow ones, but the first time that you see a yellow blob go out from behind a wall and turn into a marine, you figure it out.
In the grand scheme of things, I really much prefer the existing manual style over a dry "reference book" type thing.
