Congratulations!
This forum now has more locked threads than any other on the Internet! Amazing!

Thanks to the Gestapo of moderators on that one. I'm glad you are around to stifle communication at its very source.

I expect this thread to be locked, and possibly myself to be banned from the forum. Of course we can't have anyone realize the siituation here.

Please tell me, what exactly is the purpose of locking a thread? In most forums I have seen it is because activities with questionable legal implications are being discussed, or maybe there is excessive swearing. However in the Natural Selection forums it seems it have something to do with disagreeing with a moderator, being born in August, having brown hair, or clever this... random thread locks!

Note: I posted this is Off-Topic hoping that maybe that would reduce the chance of it being locked. We'll see.

I am not a forum administrator, so I can only offer conjecture, not policy. My observation has been that threads get locked when no new opinion is being offered, and the thread becomes a mismash rehash of the same lame stuff over and over. Threads also get locked when they are a duplicate of one or more others threads.

As you can see from my post count, I participate actively in the forum. I am sometimes thoughtful, sometimes irreverant, and sometimes emotional. But I have never felt constained in my ability to express myself and my opinions, so I regretfully disagree with the sentiment of your post.

By the way, how were you able to execute an exhaustive survey of all forums on the Internet.? Do you have a tailored web-crawler to do this? Do you have software that counts locked threads? Or were you simply being sarcastic and petulant?

(If you have any difficulty with these polysyllables, I would recommend any of the excellent versions of the Oxford Dictionary. Good luck.

The main reason threads seem to get locked is due to the conversation going far from the thread topic, when it degrades into a flame war, or because the topic itself is irrelevant.

In the third case, most threads seem to get shoved to Off-Topic, but a few certain topics are simply unwanted, not needed, and/or have been discussed to death in previous topics.

If you're bitter over having one of your topics locked, check my reason to see where you fit in.

As for your not feeling constrained, that's great. I on the other hand just started participating in the forums yesterday and already a thread I was having a discussion in was locked. Looking through the Suggestions and Ideas forums there are numerous locked threads and moderator threats and edits.

A moderators job, as I see it, is to help communication between forum members, only locking a thread or banning an individual in extreme situations.

    *sighs*

It's like this in 1984 or something. How I wish I was blissfully ignorant of the excessive moderating.

I would agree that they have. You seem to be confusing our forums with some sort of public debate yutt. When you pay for these forums, I promise that I will not lock your topics. I will be needing your $200/month for the duration of the site's existence.

Now quit whining and exagerating so much. It's the reason no one likes you here, or in real life.

Sweet... now I can say that I've been compared to a Nazi, a Fascist, and now a member of the Gestappo... my life is damn near complete.

Locked topics are the result of what has already been said...

    1. The conversation has degenerated into flaming.

    2. The topic has started out as a flame.

    3. Nothing new has been offered, and someone bumps with merely a " =) " post.

Whilst disagreeing with a moderator is not necessarily against policy, most cases of this have been locked because it became immauture and flamey. I accept criticism when it is presented to be in an adult manner.

    ***EDIT***

I also think you're exaggerating your very few locked topics...

Go look at those locked topics in the S&I forums and you'll see why they got locked. It's simply not worth it to have 500 threads about "MAEK MORE TURRENT TYPES" or whatever the favorite topic of the month is. It took me a little while to get used to the hyperactive mods around here, but I appreciate it now, since it keeps this forum from looking like, for example, the CS 1.4 forums. If you never read the CS 1.4 forums... well, you compare this forum to 1984, I compare that one to Lord of the Flies.

So far I can't say I've seen any cases of clear NS forum moderator/admin abuse, and for any cases that are even arguable, all of the mods/admins are willing to discuss it with you via PM (dragging such discussions into the public is looked down upon)

There is one case that was funny enough to remember. This is what happens when forumgoers REALLY don't play nice, and I think that SpyderMonkey's actions were quite warranted.

Before being edited, the thread title was originally an attention-getter one would interpret to be against Flayra/NS, only to see it was in its own odd way a compliment. It kept getting crazier from there.

Ok. Lets do an experiment: You make your own forum, manage to get this many people to post on it, most of them morons, and then let it progress. But this time, you are not going to lock anything or edit anyone's post.

Wait a few months. Watch the flames pile up.

Soon every topic that has a hint of controversy is a swearfest where the object is to make the other guy look bad, regardless of the topic or your opinion on it.

*sigh* These people don't get it. The moderators do their best to keep the forum clean and friendly. While I personally think they should be deleting instead of locking (Every time I see a locked topic, I can't help but read it and it usually makes me want to scream and yank my hair out like a feral animal.) You shouldn't be flat-out insulting the moderators for trying to make the forums pleasant. You should be THANKING each and every moderator and developer for ALLOWING (Yes, allowing) you to post on the boards! Nobody ever SAID you have to post here. You don't HAVE to like the moderators either, but you have to at least respect them. The original poster and anyone who agrees with him has lost my respect. Furthermore, Lord CForrester decrees this thread lame.

If anyone knows me, they know my feelings don't get hurt. Least of all by whining internet people. If anything, I simply get irritated. Especially when people come into my house and tell me how to run it.

That's the problem with the anonimity that message boards offer. People feel like they can flame others without any fear of retribution.

It also lets whiny brats act like they're superior to everyone else and pretend like they know what they're talking about.

    It's called hyperbole.

The reactions of most of the moderators to my post are almost hilarious. There is absolutely no sign of concern or friendliness, and even a few personal attacks on me.

I have no doubt that moderating forums this large can be aggravating, but that is no reason to chase away some of the few people who are trying to be reasonable. The discussion I was having had no flaming at all and I was enjoying the debate. Upon coming back the next day it had progressed by maybe two posts, none of which were flames, but it was suddenly locked.

I was very upset at the time, and in an entirely different thread I was in I noticed quite a few people mentioning that the actions of moderators seemed unreasonably harsh. I did over react by saying *all* of the moderators are Gestapo-esque, it is probably only a few.

With this thread alone as an example I think any reasonable person can see that those in charge often react with knee jerk responses and could stand to be a lot more professional and tolerant of new forum members.

I am not one of the bad guys, I just wanted to come to the forums and quietly and rationally discuss one of my favorite games, but with the current situation that doesn't seem possible.
  • yuttyutt Join Date: 2002-11-16 Member: 8885Members, Reinforced - Gold
As a side note I would like to thank Spyder Monkey for being the only patient and friendly moderator here I have run across. He replied just like anyone should expect a representative of a growing game community to. While still disagreeing with my opinions, he reacted professionally instead of hostilely

err...yutt I really can't see where you're coming from. Truely I can't. if you can show me a locked thread which didn't contain blatent flaming or old ideas that had been beaten until they were raw and bloody then I might see your point. The mods often lock posts by new posters because a week doesn't go by when a new member joins and makes his/her first post: "There should be a medical station for the marines". Seriously just that one topic comes up all the time. I've never seen the moderators do Nazism style stuff, and nor should you compare the mods to the Nazis. That kind of thing tends to make people very upset, and that's without taking into account the possibility that one of them might be Jewish. Directly insulting people in such a manner IS grounds for a thread being locked, I'm surprised this one is still open.
Calm down, drink a cool glass of your favourite poison and view the situation with an open mind. If you post a new topic that makes a good point, or a suggestion that has merit and hasn't been discussed before, then you'll find you recieve a healthy discussion about the topic. That's what I do and I've never had a thread locked on me. And I personally KNOW I've annoyed monse on one or two occassions

yutt, your "hyperbole" just came across as immature whining, so expect people to react with a bit of hostility. Your post was complete flame bait, honestly, and if it hadn't been playing right into your trollish hands to do so, it would have been locked, as flame bait posts on this forum usually are.

The mods are under no obligation to be "professional" in their dealings to you. A "professional" gets paid. They do not.

Even if the mods were completely draconian and fascist, which they're not, what concern is it of yours? You're free not to post here or read these forums. You're free to not play NS, even. That's the difference between these forums and 1984 - if you try to escape the tyrannical rule of the mods, they will not hunt you down and kill you. They will simply forget you were ever here.

If I were a mod, I'd be tempted to drive the point home by temp-banning you so you wouldn't have to feel compelled to suffer under my tyranny any further. Obviously the mods here are far more patient than I am.

The fact is, you came into a forum that is hosted and moderated by a group of people out of the generosity of their hearts, for love of a game that is distributed freely, and the people who play it. You encountered some of said people in the course of performing their job of making these forums pleasant for everyone. And your reaction was to post an obvious flame-bait topic, spitting in the face of all their hard work.

And you get all bent out of shape at receiving anything less than perfect professionalism and courtesy? Are you on crack?
  • p4Samwisep4Samwise Join Date: 2002-12-15 Member: 10831Members
And here's an idea, everyone. If you want to show your solidarity with the mods on this issue, don't feed the troll. Let this topic die silently, and illustrate that in this one instance we can make a democracy work, if we all try really hard. If yutt tries to boot the topic, just ignore him, and sooner or later he'll either go away, or try to become a productive member of this forum, and we can forgive his little outburst.

'K, everyone be quiet, starting.... NOW!

Basically, it's requesting blood and gore be in the game. It was locked because Flayra doesn't want blood and gore in the game. If the Suggestions and Ideas forum is for discussing ideas of new game elements, why wouldn't the moderator lock something that wasn't ever going to be included? Seems kinda futile to post a new topic that is hopeless before it even starts.
