Depending upon the situation, llamas may also cluck, orgle or make an alarm call. All sounds are very distinctive and easily recognizable. It will be clear what llamas are trying to express if you look at their situation and listen.
Llamas are herd animals and are excellent at communicating with each other. Take the time to watch and listen to your llamas to learn a little bit of their language.

There are certain characteristics that one should look for in selecting a guard llama. The llama should be at least 18 months old to be mature enough mentally and physically to do the job. Positive traits for a guard llama are:
athletic ability
independence
more of a leader than a follower
curiosity
awareness of surroundings
not fearful of unfamiliar things
